Can Ukraine Build Patriots Fast Enough to Stop Russian Missiles?
As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, the much-discussed Patriot missile system has emerged as a potential gamechanger in the ongoing war. Recently, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles domestically—a development that has been long sought by Ukrainian officials.
The Patriot missile system is renowned for its ability to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles, providing a crucial line of defense against the relentless barrage of Russian missiles targeting Ukrainian cities. Given the urgency of the situation, questions loom large: Will this license truly materialize? How quickly can Ukraine ramp up production? And crucially, how soon can these systems be operationally deployed to shift the dynamics of the conflict?
In the latest episode from DW News, military analyst Gustav Gressel sheds light on these pressing queries. The discussion delves into the technical and logistical challenges Ukraine may face in setting up production lines and the timeline it would take to manufacture the advanced technology required for such a sophisticated missile system.
While the prospect of domestic production of Patriot missiles could enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities, Gressel highlights the intricacies involved in the manufacturing process, which often necessitates a deep understanding of the technology and skilled labor. The timeline for establishing a robust production capability remains uncertain, sparking concerns about how soon this could translate into effective deterrence against Russian missile threats.
As both nations remain entrenched in conflict, the stakes are high. The successful deployment of domestically produced Patriot missiles could significantly bolster Ukraine’s air defense and potentially alter the course of the war by safeguarding civilian infrastructure and allowing military operations to proceed with reduced vulnerability.
The conversation surrounding the Patriot missile system is not merely a technical one, but steeped in implications for international relations, military strategy, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. As Gressel articulates in the video, viewers are left contemplating whether the roadmap to enhanced air defense can indeed be forged quickly enough to change the parameters of this devastating conflict.
In a war defined by rapid developments and shifting tactics, the ability to adapt and enhance defense strategies is more critical than ever. The question remains: can Ukraine innovate fast enough to counter the persistent threats posed by Russian missile attacks? The answer could very well shape the future of this ongoing struggle.

Ukraine can't even afford the batteries they're asking for something that they can't sustain. And we americans are not going to pay for the batteries
Dw I love your shows but please drop this whole notion of naming every new weapons system a 'game changer'.
is this true?
The poor guy is given another dead rope to get his country destroyed!?? For 5 years Ukraine only got its country smaller and break down of entire statehood!!!
Thank you President Trump for saving lives.
just let's hope they won't use them on Poland …
Hoooray! Ukraine can build their own Patriot missiles, what they are not saying is when will be the first patriot will be completed? War will be over by them and Russia will be the winner of this war. Trump making himself richer.
🤣🤣🤣there has been a lot of game changers in the past four years, none has changed the game. Russia will just destroy the factory.
Dans notre propre intérêt, nous devons abandonner l’ukraine et annuler les sanctions contre la Russie. Ce n'est pas notre guerre.
It will take years to build the plant (meanwhile the Russians will attack it as it is being built; It will take years to establish the tooling to manufacture patriot launchers and missiles; then years to start building one. Immediate effect is Zero
Everything is a game changer.. now Russia will get the license
Pistol =game changer…😂…American tank=game changer ..😂…F 16 = game changer…😂…Pateriot rocket = game changer…😂…Kids Balloons = game changer 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂…..are u kidding….stop fooling us 😡😡😡😡
Yes. They can pretty fast on media.
The Patriot missiles should be produced in multiple European countries until the Russian threat is eliminated.
Nah, another “game changer”
Now Zelensky and the Europeans have no excuse to beg from the US anymore. And if the Patriots turn out to be ineffective against next generation hypersonic missiles, Zelensky and Europe can deal with that little problem all by themselves — no longer Trump's problem, is it? He also gets to keep new tech that works for his own wars — until, that is, Zelensky and the Europeans are so desperate for it they will pay top Dollar to get their grubby hands on anything that works.
Ukraine is not strong on its own, it’s being propped up by Nato and eu.
It took years to build new factory to ramp up Patriot, so it functionally doesn't change anything militarily. The real value is signaling to Russia that they can't try to outlast the Patriot supply chain / stockpiles.
Recent data indicates the overall effectiveness of Patriots PAC-2 against advanced ballistic missiles has dropped to as low as 6%. Source: Euronews. At one billion per missile, be real people. You are selling air. If you don't believe me ask AI: Use this prompt: "What is the recent strike rate in Ukraine from patriots pac-2."
Is it just me, or is this whole thing just a distraction by Trump. The Patriot missile is extremely complicated to make and it requires a lot of proprietary sub-components. The slowness of production is often impacted by the delays in producing such sub-components. Ukraine may need to setup production lines for these parts, as well as the lines to assemble the final missile. Maintaining quality control for such systems is extremely challenging. These weapons are several times more complicated than anything Ukraine currently builds. While I want them to succeed, I am very skeptical that this is going to be an effective solution, in the short-term. At the same time, working with the technology will help the Ukrainians to better design their own.
If pac 3 is very good, Iran would not be destroying US bases that easily
From "Russia has no borders" to camping for days to buy some gas 😂
Talk is cheap, tell me what deal has he made and kept his word. 🤔
Why the Patriot system only has a 80 to 90% hit chance lol
Just another empty promise of Trump. It will take few years before Ukraine can use such licensed missile. Just license it to other US or European companies that have existing missile manufacturing factory and supply chain infrastructure. South Korea or Japan are another good option. South Korea may be the fastest country that can deliver such missiles en masse to Ukraine.
Won't anyone ask?!
OK I will; In exchange for what? the USA and definitely Trump do not give anything for free or out of goodwill.
What ever Ukraine is paying is far overpriced, he has probably sold the whole country to the USA
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He also wants Greenland again maybe fifa can give it to him on a gold platter, so his children could profit
Can Ukraine build Patriots fast enough to stop Russian missiles? – No. 5 s Video enough.
Another game changer!?🤣
Emphatically NO….it takes at least 23 months to make a patriot missile and 30 months to make it's rocket engine under the most favorable conditions with state of the art facilities and highly trained technicians…..by the time Ukraine builds its first patriot missile, the Russian army will be dining on chicken Kiev in Kiev…….
trump trying to score brownie points about time he wakes up with Putin crimes
F me! They're sending Mel Gibson in now?
1 patriot costs more than hundreds or thousands of UAVs. This is a trap. Donnie Dump only offered the missile to drain what little resources Ukraine has.
It will take years to get done.
France and Italy use SAMP/T
Germany uses IRIS-T
The UK uses CAMM
Sweden uses RBS 70 NG
Norway uses NASAMS
South Korea uses KM-SAM and the L-SAM
Taiwan uses Skybow
So i don't understand why there is so much focus on only using this American system, surely Ukraine could just be buying a range of different missiles from all around the world, or buying the license to make some of them in Ukraine. Why just focus on this one American system…
UKRAINE IS CAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING!! SLAVA UKRAINE FOREVER ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤….!!
3:16 – A single battery costs a billion dollars to BUY, not to build. Ukraine can build them for a fraction of that, and hopefully build some for export to NATO countries as well to offset the cost.
To anyone saying "Too little, too late", remember the Abrams debate. Remember the F-16 debate.
Today, F-16's roam the Ukrainian skies. Worthless right? Too little, too late, right?
Maybe check on your 401K, before it's too late.
I'm beginning to like that orange man somehow
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣wait your serious?
Let me laugh at you even harder….🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
nice one Trump.. that's the business way out… good for the US good for Ukraine
all the TDS whiners and Biden wasn't even letting Ukraine use the missiles
Trump will soon change his mind and demand a personal ‘donation’ from Ukraine, before any licensing agreement will be signed. Zero trust in Trump.
