Bangladesh seeks extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India

The political turmoil in Bangladesh continues to escalate as the country’s interim government has formally requested India to extradite ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina, who fled to Delhi in August following a student-led uprising that brought an end to her 15-year rule, is facing charges of crimes against humanity and her involvement in the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the uprising last summer.

The request for extradition comes as the interim government in Bangladesh seeks to hold Hasina accountable for her actions during her time in power and during the violent crackdown on protesters. With tensions running high between the two neighboring countries, the extradition request adds another layer of complexity to an already fragile situation.

DW’s Beenish Javed reports on the latest developments in the case of Sheikh Hasina and the growing calls for her to be extradited back to Bangladesh from India. The outcome of this request remains uncertain, but it is clear that the political landscape in Bangladesh is in a state of flux as authorities seek to bring about justice for the victims of the uprising and hold those responsible accountable.
