Why Britain Sent Its Largest Aircraft Carrier to Hunt Russian Subs
As tensions continue to rise in the Arctic region, the UK Royal Navy has taken a definitive stance in response to perceived threats from Russia, deploying its flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales. This strategic move underscores not only the escalating geopolitical landscape but also the vital role of NATO in deterring aggression in the High North.
In early July, the stakes became alarmingly evident when a Russian military aircraft ventured dangerously close to the HMS Prince of Wales, dropping a series of sonar trackers in its operational vicinity. The situation intensified as British F-35 jets were scrambled to intercept and escort the Russian plane away, highlighting the high-risk environment surrounding military operations in the region.
Anchored as a crucial player in NATO’s collective defense strategy, the HMS Prince of Wales stands as a symbol of Britain’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in contested waterways. WSJ’s Sune Rasmussen embarks on a journey aboard this formidable vessel, exploring the intricate challenges faced by NATO in addressing Russian maneuvers in the Arctic.
The video delves into various aspects of this intricate situation. It begins by outlining Russia’s aggressive posturing and the implications for NATO member states. Rasmussen provides an on-the-ground perspective from the flight deck, where the powerful capabilities of the aircraft carrier come to life.
Inside the hull of the ship, the presentation illuminates the various threats posed to the Arctic region, where the clash of military interests emphasizes the need for vigilance. The video further explores life onboard, offering viewers a glimpse into the daily operations and the rigorous preparations undertaken by the crew in this tense environment.
Finally, it addresses the considerable challenges faced by NATO forces in defending the Arctic. The increasing militarization by Russia creates not only logistical hurdles but also strategic complexities that demand a coordinated response.
As global dynamics shift and the Arctic becomes a focal point of military engagement, the presence of the HMS Prince of Wales serves as a robust reminder of the commitments made by NATO allies to confront threats and ensure stability in a critical arena. This video serves as a vital resource for understanding the intricacies of modern naval warfare and the bold measures being undertaken in the face of growing adversarial actions.

Stop Guessing UK. Get ahead of the “Putin Game” Help Ukraine to destabilise the Oligarch Russian elite. Ukraine are Years ahead of Europe in the defensive objectives.
God Bless Ukraine. AMEN
This is something that could’ve been done by land based F35. Detachment stationed all along routes through North Atlantic. From Denmark fout of Greenland. Iceland hosting F35 feet from a fellow NATO nation, British along their portion of N Atlantic & Norway plus other NATO detachment of F35 patrolling entry to Atlantic
One Penny on UK Tax per person will give MOD all it needs to defend our UK. FACT.
Same propaganda and lies 😂😂
We here in the US love our British compatriots, we don't see eye to eye on every topic but we are definitely stronger together.
aircraft against subs ? how's that by throwing rocks?
Wayyyyy behind the Rus . Cope
I wish people would stop calling the Royal Navy the UKRoyalNavy/.
Ukraine was cutting underwater cables and blowing gas and oil pipelines. Culprit of Nord Stream 2 blasts was recently captured by Germans and that guy serves in Ukrainian army as Colonel. So hold your own horses
Didn’t UK rent planes on these two carriers? UK should just rent a carrier from America. Much cheaper and much more effective.
So how many aircraft were aboard ? 2 F35s. 2 Wildcats and 2 Merlin’s . Pathetic ! The Russians are laughing at us and our allies are embarrassed
The man who can't do a wading pool correctly thinks he can manage Greenland.
Its not NATOs Aircraft carrier its Britians.
So the have more than one carrier?
Argentina will send some missiles we didn’t forget Malvinas we will hunt you down
6:00 Genuinely reassuring to see the chapel empty 😂
🇷🇺 is a serious threat to the globe.
Well done 🇬🇧
Russian threat? Pretty sure only UK missiles have been fired into Russia not the other way around ✅🤡✅🤡✅ Propaganda nothing more ✅🤡✅🤡✅🤡
A carrier group without a proper escort ships is a sitting duck against russian subs
i read that it was a dump run
Russia is a problem for the whole world. Trump is an idiot and the British government will not tolerate a dumb USA government who don’t understand the threat. USA is a country thats only existed for 250 years and doesn’t have the thousands of years experience that the British have and European countries
Their largest? HA, they only have 2 and the other one is not operational.
I like how the media use terms like "largest" as if UK has Plenty of carriers and this is their "largest one" when they only have 2 and both are the same class
Why not use words like "only operational" one because out of the 2 carriers one is often in dock anyway
'Our relationship with the US has never been stronger' .
What rubbish. Trump is an enemy, not an ally and the US is no longer to be trusted
The UK is desperately short of operational escorts, manpower retention and recruitment a complete lack of investment in naval assets has made the Royal Navy a shadow of its former greatness. Until government either left or right realise how important a strong navy is essential to the protection of the UK then nothing will halt the sad decline of a once proud blue water navy. The RN is now in a shocking state of decline.
"prevent further esculation" is an esculation. shameful so called journalism and insulting the intelligence of the public.
The world is always tense.
LOL. Russia may be the 2nd best military in Urkaine but still will spank the pathetic fallen UK military. Trust me Bro, Russia isnt scared.
OMG so adorbs….
They only take force seriously.
"We're lagging behind Russia and only reacting to what they do," Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain told MSNBC.
"We're caught off guard by the fact that Russia, unlike the United States, is pursuing a clear and precise course."
This was said in 2015.
This is why Trump wanted Greenland.
We do have the orbit, right? Why doesn’t Nato build a net of spying satellites like the Elon Must Starlink? It’s possible and it could track everything. Basically it could track submarines, planes, ships and even when ICBM are launched. It’s possible, we’re not in the 1950s.
Maybe fight against poverty an unemployment…
Oh look.
The WSJ cashing in on the new Arctic Sea. Despite denying its existence.
Unsurprising.
Poland spends 5% but you don’t see any money or footage from themselves 😊
This is why trump wants Greenland. Greenland and Denmark cannot defend these waters alone
The Bolshevik´s empire is gone, the Romanov´s 🇷🇺 empire is gone. NEVER 2 WITHOUT 3, the Saddam Putsein ´s 🇷🇺 empire will follow!
Would it cheaper to use surveillance drones, instead of F35… or it is to show for the media? Yes, normal drones might not survive in such harsh environments, there is will, there is a way…
Um😂😂😂😂 ok. They can't even take care of their Home land.
They have a "carrier"😂😂😂😂
