Canada unable to prevent tariffs from taking effect, says Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear on Friday that there is nothing Canada can do to prevent a 25 per cent tariff from being imposed on their goods starting Feb. 1. Trump emphasized that the tariff threat was not a negotiating tactic, but rather a necessary measure to boost the U.S. economy. When asked if there was a possible concession Canada could make, Trump stated that his administration was not seeking one.

In regards to Canadian energy imports, Trump hinted that he may reduce the tariff on Canadian crude imports to 10 per cent. The president’s stance on tariffs has caused concern and uncertainty for Canada, Mexico, and China, as they await the impact on their economies. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, as Trump indicated that his administration is prepared to move forward with the tariffs regardless of any attempts at negotiation.
