Bhutan’s Mindfulness City: A Bold Vision to Bring Youth Back Home
In a groundbreaking initiative, Bhutan is set to launch a new city focused on mindfulness and well-being, aiming to create job opportunities and entice the younger generation to return home. Over the past few years, approximately 9% of Bhutan’s population has left the country, seeking better prospects abroad. This trend poses a challenge for a nation that prioritizes happiness and sustainable development.
The visionary plan, spearheaded by the King of Bhutan, reflects the country’s unique approach to balancing economic growth with cultural values. By establishing a hub that promotes well-being, the initiative not only targets employment but also seeks to rejuvenate the fabric of Bhutanese society, fostering a sense of community and purpose among young people.
In the upcoming segment, “60 Minutes” delves into this ambitious project, exploring its potential to revitalize Bhutan’s economy while enhancing its distinctive identity. Launched in 1968, “60 Minutes” continues to captivate audiences with its investigative reporting and human-interest stories, making it a staple in American television for over 50 seasons.
Join us as we uncover Bhutan’s innovative approach to blending modernity with tradition, and witness how one small kingdom is endeavoring to reclaim its youth and redefine the future.

Thanks for giving back to Bhutan.😊
Ask them about the massive pollution of rivers caused by the indiscriminate cement plants established for this "fairy tale" project.
Very "transcendent" indeed!
AI? Won't that need 5G?
The smug ignorance of the host was Wild, she just couldn’t grasp the concepts of anything beyond basic capitalism; she’s like the embodiment of what we’re told is a stereotypical American, which is sad aF 😂
Environmentally conscious capitalism was quite literally “fairyland” to her 😂😂😂 This is what the typical American education system does to the masses,,, not all, but most, like this lady 😂
The interviewer is so old she should retire and give young people a chance.
I hope consumerism and excessive materialism will not destroy this enchanted kingdom.
Omg I want to live here!!!!!!!!
Read The Baffler article on this. The massacre that cleared the space for the wonderful new city (real estate) coming, the suppression of anything that questions the "love" of their king, the violence achieved quite without democracy indeed, and the mindset among white 60 Minutes viewers who eat up the idea of simple folk more earthy than they are. In the end, there`s nothing happening here that doesn`t happen everywhere among humans. Their PR is not even that unique. You should have lived in Japan in the 80s when they claimed to be rich and famous because of their Asian values and sacred traditions. INVENTED traditions, quite different values on the ground than as depicted in western media, and oh yeah…turns out all the money is gone. I did, and this all sounds very familiar.
All African Leaders and people, need to see an listen very carefully and act up it
Normally, I'm not the kind to get emotional quickly, but when I listened to His Majesty's speech in live broadcast, I realized what I had left behind. I started tearing up when HM's words resonated within me; perhaps deep down, I knew how genuine and sincere his words were. Part of me died that day, knowing that I wasn't there at the gathering to respond back with others to HM's statement that " I too will serve to realise HM's vision." The only thing I can do now is learn as much as I can and gain all the experiences in hope that one I will be able to make up to my King and my country and contribute to its growth. I just hope I'm not too late. It's reassuring to know that my family and country are waiting for my return.
in 2018 I motorcycled India for 2 months then spent 5 days in Bhutan and crossed from Jaigon. Standing at the India border side is full of rubbish. Looking over at the Bhutan side is spotless. India – why can't you look across at your neighbors border and ask "how do we make that happen" Such a bizarre contrast. My time in Bhutan was awesome. I will go back!
Anyone who says Bhutanese have “left” is wrong. Many just “take leave to come back.”
Everyone outside still has their mind, heart, and soul with His Majesty and Bhutan. Where else in the world can you find a life as peaceful, with leaders like ours?
And one thing is certain—although there may be challenges now, it’s also a good thing. People gain exposure, understand what’s happening around the world, and this only deepens our appreciation for how beautiful our country truly is.
We cannot always expect our way of life to remain untouched or always safe—but that’s part of growth, and it makes coming home even more meaningful.
I love my King. And someday, I hope to apply the skills I’ve learned to serve Bhutan in whatever way I can.
This… this is the dream. This would be an amazing place to live. I doubt they want an American trying to come live there though:/
Hmm, I hope this doesn't turn out one of those pie in the sky projects where foreign companies drain the coffers of a poor country offering amazing ideas that never materialise and before too long all the money has gone on "designs" and "consultants". Why iare there no Bhutanese designers and architdects at the forefront of these projects? Many Bhutanese children are still living in extreme poverty, receiving little to no education and being sent to Monasterys because their families can;t feed them.
What an inspiring story
One Of the GREATEST NATIONS left on EARTH… Never give up On CULTURE and the PEOPLE Bhutan Never…
This is how life should be lived. How people should govern themselves. This is human excellence. Congrats Bhutan, may your culture spread far and wide.
They are number 5 on the bitcoin list….bitcoin is the fuel for this new city.
wow
Lovely! Nothing wrong with wanting to keep your culture, traditions till this day. The people are happy, the nature is respected. It makes your country unique and people don't get consumed by what the world wants you to be. We are all different and it should be respected.
They got the money from where?!?
I love how this WASPY western white woman has to describe it as a "fairy tale city" because the guy in charge of it simply wants to make it the best he can for the people there. Such a typically cynical western capitalist viewpoint, sad and telling.
I'm obsessed 💌
Average annual wage in Australia is around $100,00 in Bhutan it is around $13,000. Life is good in both countries. Can't blame the young people for leaving.
