Tensions Rise Between Thailand and Cambodia: The Potential for Conflict and International Intervention
In a startling escalation of a long-standing border dispute, Thailand and Cambodia find themselves on the brink of war. The situation has intensified dramatically since Thursday, with heavy artillery fire exchanged between the two nations, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians.
The acting Thai Prime Minister has issued a grave warning, indicating that the countries could be on the path to military conflict. This contentious standoff has prompted drastic measures, including the declaring of martial law in eight districts near the border as authorities respond to what they describe as "Cambodia’s use of force to enter Thai territory."
The violence, which has reportedly continued for a second consecutive day, underscores a history of territorial disagreements, which have often flared up. As governments scramble to control the situation, regional player Malaysia has proposed a ceasefire to facilitate conversations aimed at de-escalation.
Our coverage includes on-the-ground reports from correspondents who detail the harrowing experiences of displaced families and the urgent calls for peace. We delve into expert opinions, like those from Tommy Walker, a journalist covering the conflict, and Joshua Kurlantzick from the Council on Foreign Relations, who shed light on the geopolitical implications of the situation. Georg Matthes, DW Southeast Asia Bureau Chief, will also provide insights into the broader regional dynamics at play.
Amidst these developments, the potential for involvement from superpowers like the United States and China hangs in the balance. Both nations hold significant sway in Southeast Asia, and their reaction to the escalating conflict could reshape the region’s political landscape.
As the clock ticks, the world watches closely. Will diplomatic efforts prevail? Or are Thailand and Cambodia destined for deeper conflict, prompting external powers to choose sides? The stakes have never been higher as both nations confront a potentially devastating future.

cambodia agreed to ceasefire from asean chair malaysia request, while thai refused. that says alot
It truly broke me when I heard people say that Cambodia has been invading Thailand for decades. What decades? Where is the evidence? Please show us when and how Cambodia did that because we’ve never seen it.
Thailand keeps accusing Cambodia of using drones to monitor their territory. Again, what drone? where is the proof? Thailand makes the accusations, but offers no evidence. Meanwhile, Cambodia is the one constantly being blamed—even when we’re the ones under attack.
Cambodia has collected real evidence to show the truth. But sadly, the international community barely listens, because many believe that Thailand is more valuable diplomatically and economically, so they side with the stronger voice, not the honest one.
Diplomatically, we tried. Cambodia genuinely sought peace. Ask Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, they witnessed the negotiation. Both sides agreed to a ceasefire, and yet, just one hour later, Thailand launched an attack on Cambodia at night.
So before blaming Cambodia, ask what really happened. Look at the evidence. Listen to both sides, not just the louder one.
Why don't u come to Cambodia to see the situation? Or u afraid of F16?
Thailand troops try to grab Cambodia's land, so we have right to defend
Cease fire? Cease fire while as of today 4 AM. This morning Cambodia soilders started attack Tard provice and opened up a Navy Skirmishes while BOTH areas are not in conflict zone.
and so far We have yet to see a slightest remorse from Cambodia side from using Artillery shells on Civilian areas causing innocent casualties.
Hit and Run playing victim without accountability is unacceptable, atleast for me.
and from Recent Cambodia's local news, they threaten to use PHL-03 artillery which has effective attack range of 130Km into Bankok if Thai armies don't withdraw within 48hrs.
While all of this going on Cambodian claim they are only response in "defend", It is true if you follow best defense is offense litereally.
all the SCAMMER Camboidan bots… they do what they do best, scam tge world 😂
For centuries, Thailand has had a persistent desire to invade Cambodia. As a smaller country with a weaker economy and population, we cannot be the ones who want war against Thailand or invade it. The leaders of the Thai military are misleading. We Cambodians only seek peace for all humanity. I passionately believe that civilians of both countries only want peace.
THAILAND IS INVADING CAMBODIA! We just want to protect our land and our people. Of course, when there’s conflict, there’s pain on both sides. Unfortunately, Thailand seems skilled at spreading falsehoods. Their ancestors have provided misleading history lessons in schools, leading children to grow up believing they are victims. I don't blame them—I love all humanity.
It's their ancestors who have instilled hatred toward Cambodia and a desire for our land. Think of it this way: when thieves invade your home and commit violence against you and your loved ones, do you stay calm? Of course, you fight back; you protect yourself! To the greedy Thai soldiers, you started it, you must stop it!
am ASEAN and strongly disagree with Joshua Kurlantzict. He only sees the old perspective of Western analysts looking at the East, using the idea of America's world supremacy as the main principle. No Thai soldier dares to revolt at this time, except 1. There is chaos that cannot be controlled. 2. The people are tired of the instability and conflicts of interest of the coalition government that occur frequently and there are calls for the military to come in. In my view as a Thai political analyst for over 30 years, the real cause of the fighting is: 1. The deep relationship between the family of the former Thai prime minister and the family of the leader of Cambodia. Both families have had close marriages between the children of the two families for a long time. But the big problem is that there is news that there is joint investment in both above-ground and underground businesses. Importantly, after the former prime minister was pardoned, he took over the government and appointed his own daughter as prime minister, dismissing the former prime minister who was a close friend because he was ineffective in solving problems and could not give orders as desired. 2. During this time, the two former leaders of the two countries had a secret agreement on sharing benefits from natural gas sources in the overlapping area that had not yet been agreed upon. A nominee company was prepared to receive a concession if everything was agreed upon, even preparing to buy shares in an oil refinery to wait for the project. 3. As for the casino Cambodian leaders have many benefits, both gambling dens and a reputation as a scam city. The former Thai PM has a plan to allow them to be established in Thailand and is currently fighting the law, but there is more resistance from the public than expected, so it has not progressed. But there is no information that the two people are in conflict over this issue. The source analyzed that the conflict of the business deal of the two elders began to waver when the former Thai PM drove the negotiation project of the overlapping area, which is a source of natural gas worth a lot of money, delayed. That is understandable because there is resistance from the Thai people. Former Prime Minister Thaksin fell into his own trap at this point. This is the main reason why Hun Sen is upset in his heart. 4. The spark of the conflict occurred because former Prime Minister Hun Sen wanted to show the potential and influence of his son Hun Manet, who is the current Prime Minister of Cambodia. So he incited nationalism and created a story of heroism to show people that his son is the strongest by invading Thai territory in a place where there are many ancient temples that he thinks are his culture. He changed the history to make Cambodia greater than Thailand in every way. He has laid the foundation for 10 years and now nationalism is ripe. It must be shown. And he think the Thai Prime Minister will not object. He just wants to put on a play to deceive the Cambodian people. And then the problem arose when there was a mobile phone conversation between the Thai Prime Minister and Hun Sen, whom she respectfully called Uncle every time. During the conversation, there was a moment when she wanted to flatter Hun Sen, "Don't believe the response of the Thai army commander. They are on the opposite side from us. If you want anything, tell me. I will handle it." That was like a bomb in the hearts of Thai people and the entire army. They thought, "The Thai Prime Minister is humiliating his own army commander to please her father's business partners." And what she said was not wrong because her family had been overthrown by the military all along. But how could Thai people accept a leader of the country doing such a shameful thing? Even though they were talking privately. That was why the court ordered her to suspend her duties. 5. When everything escalated to this point, the clash occurred. It happened because Thai people had been holding back emotions for a long time, both economic problems, boredom with political conflicts, and corruption problems of politicians. In fact, it was a hundred times more than in the military circle. Everything came to a final conclusion: the Thai Prime Minister lacked maturity and ability. No one believed that she could solve those problems. When the conflict with Cambodia occurred, Thai people became even more angry with the Prime Minister's family. She looks like a Thai but has a Cambodian heart. "Thai people are chasing me to be the Prime Minister of Cambodia every day." This is not an edited sentence. It was in her conversation with Hun Sen. The whole world heard it. Respect to you Joshua. But it's a deep fact that I want you to know.
This is a power grab by the Thai military. The Thai army created a crisis so they could slow-coup the civilian government. The Thai Army crossed into Cambodia, destroying barbed-wire fences after one of their soldiers died from a 50+ year-old Khmer Rouge land mine, which the Thais claimed Cambodia planted recently. Classic red-flag.
Tommy Walker you have to do better
That's when you don't work on your own history. I was always wondering why we hear about the Holocaust left and right and nothing about Pol Pot and the Cambodian genocide. Thailand is crazy in a different way… They practice some sort of person cult thing, which is still quite common in Asia, with their monarch.
You don't answer the question you posted, why the Thai reject the mediation?
Cambodia keeps saying they are retaliating in self-defense.
Self-defense retaliation should only occur along the border.
But why did Cambodia attack gas stations, hospitals, civilian shops?
I’m from Cambodia we need peace 🇰🇭❤️
Full Support to Cambodia from India . 🇰🇭🇮🇳
just because you are rich like Israel , you shouldn't bully others who are weak and poor.
Cambodia need peace, Thailand please stop war, please respect international rules
China went to war against Vietnam mostly for Cambodia in 1979. Cambodia has stayed a loyal ally to China since. Thailand really needs to be very careful not to overstep even if it has military superiority over Cambodia.
conflict with cambodia is just a distraction from the political instability in thailand. cambodia is a victim and a scapegoat from the thai political chaos
Seriously Siams need to stop manipulating the world. As Thailand is more powerful than Cambodia so now the innocent Cambodia is the villain? We Cambodian never want wars we only want peace and try to bring this conflict to the international laws since the beginning till they attacked us first and we have to protect our land our heritage our people, seriously people dont let them manipulate you and learn history do fact check before coming at Cambodia🙏🏼
First Thai attacked Cambodia and unwilling to bring this case to ICJ and now shamelessly acting like victims on social media while attacing ruthlessly on Cambodia’s heritage site, Preah Vihea, civilian areas villages pagodas leading the innocent citizens to evacuate and causing deaths and injuries
Thaksin Shinawatra said that "Hun Sen must be punished" for his scheming. That sentiment rarely leads to a lasting settlement.
