Guy Fieri Tries a Carolina-Style Burger at a Drive-In Institution ππ₯
In the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina, there’s a culinary gem that has captured the hearts (and appetites) of locals for decades: South 21 Drive-In. As featured on the iconic show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by the spirited Guy Fieri, this beloved drive-in is not just about food; it’s about a nostalgic experience steeped in Southern hospitality.
A Trip to South 21 Drive-In
When you visit South 21, you’re stepping into an institution known for its old-school burgers that have made waves across Charlotte. The drive-in boasts a retro vibe, complete with carhops who bring your food directly to your vehicle, evoking a sense of Americana that many of us remember fondly.
What Makes a Carolina-Style Burger?
The highlight of Guy’s visit is undoubtedly the Carolina-style burger. What sets this burger apart? It’s all about the layers of flavor that encapsulate the essence of Southern cooking. Made with a perfectly seasoned beef patty, the burger is adorned with classic toppings that bring a unique twist: creamy coleslaw, tangy barbecue sauce, and a slice of melted American cheese.
Hereβs a breakdown of what to expect when you bite into this delicious creation:
- The Beef Patty: Made from high-quality ground beef, seasoned just right, and grilled to juicy perfection.
- Toppings: The magic lies in the toppings. Traditionally, you’ll find barbecue sauce that adds a smoky sweetness, complemented by crunchy coleslaw for that perfect textural contrast.
- Cheese: A generous slice of American cheese that melts into the warm patty, binding the flavors together in a gooey embrace.
- Bun: All of this goodness is nestled in a lightly toasted bun, giving you that satisfying crunch with every bite.
A Feast for the Senses
As Guy devours this Carolina-style burger, you can see the joy it brings. Itβs not just a meal; itβs a celebration of flavors and a testament to the rich culinary traditions of the South. The vibrant atmosphere of South 21 Drive-In adds to the experience, making it the perfect place to relish comfort food.
Perfect Pairings
No burger experience is complete without a side! At South 21, you can choose from a variety of classic sides such as crispy onion rings or golden fries, which are the perfect accompaniments to your Carolina-style burger.

Bar B Q King is no longer there. Closed & torn down
I just can't get into eating a dinner in my car. I get drinking a cup of coffee or a soda while driving to somewhere. I get reaching my hand into a bag of Doritos doe a chip or two while driving. But eating my meal sitting there in a hot car when my butt could be in an air-conditioned restaurant setting, is something that I just can't… wont… do.
Hey Food Network πποΈ

Went to Columbia a few times while my buddy was living there and getting his masters at USC β he took me to the Points every time. Our favorite bar was Group Therapy which I believe isnβt there anymore or under a diff name. The place wasnβt open or closed, it was either In Session or Out of Session.

Another amazing video. Not only do we need to see more of the best of each season of Diners Drive Ins and Dives, but I would love to see full episodes of Iron Chef America. Like if you want to see both of these as much as I do.

No more "Penguin Drive-In (Charlotte, NC)"…, that's such a bummer! However, at least we can use that name title for cartoons if y'all know what I mean by that, don't yah?!

Being a tar heel, southern cuisine oozes from my pores, and ends up in every meal……..
That was an absolutely terrible burger. Whenever you make a burger you have to spread the toppings all the way to the edge of the bun. He put a little dollop of chili in the middle of the coleslaw. You're not going to taste any of that until you get halfway through the burger? And not having anything on the top bun? Weird!
There is no lamb?π
