Why the World’s Largest Megaproject Collapsed: An Exploration of Neom
In a stunning twist for one of the most ambitious construction efforts in history, Saudi Arabia’s Neom megaproject has come to a grinding halt. Initially envisioned as a sci-fi metropolis that would redefine urban living and sustainability, the project now stands as a stark example of the clash between grand dreams and financial realities.
With over $50 billion already invested, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision for a futuristic wonderland is struggling against the weight of its extraordinary costs. As the kingdom reallocates funds to wind down contracts, massive structures designed to shape a new era have been left abandoned, slowly succumbing to the encroaching desert.
In a detailed analysis, WSJ’s Eliot Brown brings clarity to the situation, leveraging internal documents and satellite imagery to unravel the series of decisions that led to the project’s abrupt standstill. As he navigates through the layers of ambition, hope, and inevitable disappointment, viewers are offered a comprehensive look at what went wrong with Neom.
Chapter Highlights:
- Neom’s Failure (0:00) – The introduction sets the stage, illuminating the reasons behind the project’s abrupt halt and the implications it carries for the kingdom.
- The Vision and Design (0:39) – This segment delves into the initial grand vision, showcasing the unique architectural proposals and the futuristic technologies that were meant to be implemented.
- Latest Updates on the Project (1:37) – As of now, the project has come to a virtual standstill, raising questions about the future of this once-promising venture.
- Origins of Neom (3:19) – Brown examines how Neom originated, tracing its roots back to the broader economic goals of Saudi Vision 2030, aimed at reducing the kingdom’s dependency on oil revenues.
- Satellite Images of Projects Today (5:13) – The use of satellite technology reveals a revealing perspective on the current status of Neom, showing the halted constructions in stark detail.
- Ballooning Costs (7:02) – Here, the staggering nature of the project’s costs comes to light, exploring the financial miscalculations that contributed to the slow degradation of the original plan.
- Mutual Delusion (9:43) – This final chapter tackles the mindset of both investors and Saudi authorities as a host of unrealistic expectations intersected with the harsh realities of finance and sustainability.
With Neom now just a reminder of ambitious aspirations, Brown’s investigation prompts critical reflections on the limits of megaprojects in an unpredictable global landscape. The report serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of grandiose planning in a world where financial prudence often takes a backseat to lofty visions. As the dust settles on the partially constructed ruins of what was once deemed the future, the questions linger: What will happen next for Neom, and what lessons will be learned?

the idea is 50 years ahead of its time. The technology is available but its just too expensive for now.
Maybe they didn't dream big enough.
Who could have ever saw this one coming…?
Why it failed? Due to McKinsey sycophancy
They will find a way to utilize what has been done and convert it to something else. Imagine if they got a Maglev line up and running within ten years. The US should do the same – convert Amtrak's infrastructure to MAGLEV, it would be a boon to the economy like no other. To think this was a loss of money is short-sighted.
And here I am reading Perkins Confession of EHM. I believe there is a chapter dedicated to the saudis in that book. History repeats 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is what happens when you're a narcissist, with a massive ego plus a god complex. All show, no go.
4:32 It's weird to think that this was the most reasonable and least ostentatious/delusional of all their ideas. 😂
Well that was a shocker. NOT
Imagine what could that 50 billion $ would have created a bigger impact on solving key global issues like water crisis and deforestation all for something stupid nonsense sci fi project
Line comes hyphen 😢
First thing that stuck out to me on that neom video what the glass panes on the sides of the city. Which was absolutely ludicrous cause not only would the cost of making and installing those be enormous but also making such panes on a desert arid region like Saudi Arabia would cause those glass panes to be scratched and dented to shreds by dust and sand.
Archeologists will find this in the future and make television documentaries about the wonders of the concrete and steel structures in the desert.
Oh I am so surprised that it failed 🤣
Nature Won!
They should have asked China
A fool (or bloodthirsty dictator) and his money are soon parted.
RIP to the people murdered to make way for this farce.
Oh .. top Western consultant you said ? 3:25
Human stupidity knows no bounds
consultants – you want us to jump? how high?
NEOM IS CURSED EDOM BY THE SHORE OF THE RED SEA
Malachi 1:4 – Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.
Awww man I was so excited to never go there!
sounds to me like MSB drew a line in the sand.
Don’t worry! Drill baby drill 😅😂
How consulting companies fooled this delusional idiot to shell out huge chunks of cash from their vault is crazy, they just have to pitch their plans to one single fool instead of multiple countries!!😂😂
As if the whole world didn't see this coming a light year away
Would have been better if they used 50B for Nuclear projects & Sewage treatment plants.
Don't worry, I'm sure the good people of Saudi Arabia will just vote MBS out.
Just wasted mad money smh
Coz it was stupid. 🙄
Probably a cover up for expensive war preparations
I knew this project wasn’t happening the second I heard about it. Who was going to pay for all that?
It's the ballroom of the Middle East 🤭
Well the project failed because all the intellectual resource of these consulting firms would have gone in planning to deceive this dumb-head buffoon instead of sheer technical knowledge of the project itself!!! And the boneheaded fell for that, unbelievable?
were are the weather engineering people, this is it.
My take. NOEM is to capital construction that Springtime For Hitler for Broadway. In this case, a way to transfer money from their sovereign wealth fund to MLS and his circle. Be sure, most contractors were kicking back to MLS
I could have paid a bunch of 7-year-old kids to come up with all the ideas in this insane project…and it probably still would have been more feasible than this.
somebody was smoking that pookie pipe 🤣
complete idiocy
This would have worked for length of 3-4 kms at max, not more thn that
Western countries are not building anything but their media are always talking about other countries failing projects when there are thousands of successful projects they ignored.
S.A. is both rich and weak (physically and mentally)
after evicting and killing some natives, a prince with a big ego dumps dozens of billions into the sand
