British Farmer Makes Historic Decision Amid Severe Drought
In a startling reflection of the changing agricultural landscape, British farmer Olly Harrison has decided to forgo ordering wheat seed for the first time in hundreds of years. Speaking to Times Radio, Harrison expressed his concerns over the ongoing extreme drought conditions affecting the UK, which have left farmers grappling with unprecedented challenges.
“This is the first time ever on this farm that we’ve never ordered any wheat seed,” Harrison lamented, highlighting the gravity of the situation. As the summer heat intensifies, he warned that without genuine government investment aimed at equipping farmers to adapt to such extreme weather, the future of food production in the UK could be jeopardized.
Harrison’s sentiments resonate deeply within the farming community, where many are facing similar struggles. The current weather patterns not only threaten wheat production but could also have broader implications for food supply and farming viability in Britain. As conditions become more unpredictable, farmers are urgently calling for support and resources to help them adapt and thrive in an increasingly challenging environment.
With agriculture on the front lines of climate change, Harrison’s decision serves as a stark reminder of the need for systemic changes within the farming industry. Without adequate support and investment, the landscape of British farming may be irrevocably altered, potentially affecting food availability long into the future.
As the nation faces the reality of an arid summer, the conversation around sustainable farming practices and government intervention has never been more critical. Farmers like Olly Harrison are not just advocates for their own livelihoods, but are also sounding alarms for the food security of an entire nation.

But you are going to be prepared to fight a war with Russia… as I heard.
Politicians want to get rid of farmers clearly they have been no help ❤
lol Brexit means Brexit. Take back control and umm somefin somefin rule Britannia 😂😂😂
A real farmer doesn't have time to be an "influencer" or an "activist"
Plant more hedgerows and dig more ditches they are green and will create local climate and shade and water catchment, dig underground water tanks and use solar with aquaponics for fish and leafy greens .
So he doesn't think that he should be contributing to the British economy at all? The Ukrainians have fields full of bombs but they are still farming. ❤
He said he didn't order seed because the costs were too high, not this supposed drought.
The costs are too high because of the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
Russia and the Persian gulf are where a vast amount of the worlds fertilizer and diesel come from, both are vital for farming.
So called "Russian" sanctions and the blockade of the Gulf along with ridiculous Net Zero policies are why the costs are too high, not a bit of warm weather.
Why are we still promoting industrial agriculture and all of its problems, despite the existence of permaculture?
calling Olly Harrison a "Farmer" is a bit far fetched hes the most useless farmer out there. just wants shiney new machines to drive about in
Good interviewee but she was totally ignorant of the subject !
I’m confused, is times news a channel for small children?
They explain things as if it was .
Hey how about stopping all the arsonists across uk and europe? France alone has arrested 500 arsonists.
Too many interviewers in our country asking stupid questions.
People can't communicate anymore. Lost in vulger subtext and double vulger meanings. Lost the plot. Communication confusion and complication. Crazy
Nationalise the water companies
Surely… the title should say England's farmers- not British or UK, we in Scotland are busy harvesting and although I'm unsure of quality or quantity, it's going as per normal!
I have selected wheat types that have long root systems which reach further down into layers of moisture layered soil.Look at the trees around you are they dying no.Thats because thier root systems are further down and able to take moisture from the soil.I farm in Africa.
Weather whiplash?
Oh, purlease….
Where do they get these people from?
We are perfectly capable of solving this drought then floods. It needs investment. Reservoirs, river dredging and drainage.
Dig big holes direct drainage to said big hole fill with rain. Store water , use water when required.
What a load of hot air balloon, weather whiplash sounds like a car accident victim claiming Compo, and Mr Blogs don’t you clean and treat your own wear seed harvested from the previous season??
how much does it cost to build a reservoir.???……..surely you have to line the reservoir with something to stop water from just soaking away in dry conditions , i suppose clay would be the main thing to use. then you have to have pumps and irrigation equipment to actually irrigate the crops and the manpower. and as olly points out if there's no money in growing the crop in the first place your just adding a huge cost to a loss making job……….one minute the government are saying they want to tackle the cost of living which probably means they want to see the price of food come down in supermarkets then the next minute people are saying farmers should invest hundreds of thousands of pounds into on farm water storage ………..you can't have cheap food and a high cost of production
