Reservation Hatao Andolan Explained: Unpacking the Protest Against Caste-Based Quotas
In a striking display of dissent, over 50 protesters were detained at Delhi’s iconic Jantar Mantar as part of the recently ignited Reservation Hatao Andolan. This movement, emerging from a broader national conversation about social equity, advocates for a re-evaluation of the existing caste-based reservation system. It seeks to replace quotas based on caste with those grounded in economic status, sparking significant debate across India.
The demonstrators argue that the current reservation framework has become outdated. They propose several key changes, including the introduction of a “creamy layer” provision, aimed at ensuring that economic factors take precedence over caste. Additionally, they are calling for the rollback of the University Grants Commission (UGC) roster system, which they believe perpetuates an inequitable distribution of educational opportunities, and restrictions on individuals receiving repeated benefits from reservation policies.
Supporters of the movement contend that economic circumstances should be the primary criteria for reservation, as poverty transcends caste lines. They argue that this transition would make the reservation system fairer and more relevant to today’s socio-economic landscape. By focusing on economic status, they believe it is possible to address the needs of the truly disadvantaged while eliminating the perceived misuse of caste-based quotas by those already benefiting from socio-economic advantages.
On the other hand, critics of the Reservation Hatao Andolan maintain that caste-based reservations are crucial for addressing historical injustices and social exclusion. They argue that reservations are not merely about economic upliftment but are also aimed at ensuring representation and inclusion for marginalized communities that have faced systemic discrimination for centuries. The perspective underscores the complexity of the issue, raising questions about equity, historical context, and the social fabric of the nation.
The protests at Jantar Mantar signify not only a demand for policy change but also a broader engagement with the question of identity and justice in contemporary India. As discussions evolve and public sentiment shifts, the Reservation Hatao Andolan encapsulates the struggle for a balanced approach to social justice that resonates with both historical grievances and modern realities.
As this movement gains momentum, India stands at a crossroads regarding its reservation policies—keen to address the voices of all citizens while navigating the intricate web of caste, class, and economic disparity.

BJP = Bhim Janta Party, सबसे पहले, GENERAL CASTE को एक राजनीतिक पार्टी बनानी चाहिए—प्रत्येक जिले और प्रत्येक राज्य से एक-एक प्रतिनिधि—राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर एकजुट हों, और अपने स्वयं के नियम बनाएं Beggars are not choosers
So long there is casteism in the society , reservation will continue to be practiced . The minority privileged class enjoying untold reservation facilities before freedom era . 80% people of India belong to SC/ST and OBC category and they are being tortured, exploited , humiliated and discriminated every day and everywhere , not only in the society , but also in the office premises . And all these are due to so called Manuvadi orthodox opportunist people .
I don’t remember whether it is told by Gandhiji. – To uplift the so called lower caste people, give them all the I r don’t remember who said -Provide assistance to raise their knowledge/standard/intelligence/ etc-generally raise their society . Let them compete with all general public and selection should be on merit only. This will increase the standard of all our institutions .Dr.Ambetkar also fixed a time limit for reservations. But our politicians play with this, and continue reservation . In fact they increased the quota for their advantage. Now I am happy to note that Gen Z has taken in their hands this very negative problem. Jaihind.
We don't want reservation. so we have to start a new gen z movment should start inter caste marriage between Brahman and kshatriya community girl and family
If OBC / SC/ST people who forms a majority in our society is not able to protest against this blatant castesist discriminatory argument against reservation that itself shows how poorly they are placed in society. That a minority upper caste is,able to show to the world that the whole of India is,against reservation is nothing but conditioning people .. Truth is far from it. Reservation is needed for many more years until equality is attained. otherwise an unequal india can never become an economic power in the world.l
Constitution gives Equal Opportunities to all students irrespective of Caste and Crede and Religions.
Dr Ambedkar did not get Reservation but studied by his Capacity.
He got Job because of his Education and Competency.
He suggested because of Parliament decision for 10yrs only.
Only Economically Weaker section should be given help in Education.
Anti reservation is not a bad Idea. The Supreme Court should have struck it down as violating Article 14. Meritorious citizen thrown out of the window. No respect for the Indian constitution by the very SC which solely is created to protect the constitution. A revolution by students becomes inevitable.
Don't Just advocate the current structural system of reservation based on time of Independence , current era is changing and there are many economically disadvantaged families within the country , meanwhile you'll argue about caste discrimination and about that there needs a approach to aware peoples to don't discriminate on basis of caste but even the reserved castes are not proportionally getting reservation among them, so yes reservation needs reform.
Reservations should be limited to One Generation subject to Creamy layer in Education Services and Elections
Caste based R in job medical. Collage i in justice to gernal category .From New Chandigarh Punjab.
What a misleading title…clearly proven you guys are pro leftist
Those are poor people they can give opportunity of reservation only not economically Rich
ok reservation is not egalitarian then what about the economic and social benefits the upper strata is enjoying from ancestral time distribute the economic resources equally among everyone thus reducing concentration of wealth which happened due to ill founded social stratification

All land should also be nationalized…..
Some rss nationalist are doing drama this cannot be removed by RSS GUNS U CANNOT BE REWRITTEN AMBEDKAR
why shouldn't be caste system be completely removed? that way no one is. big caste and low caste. nobody will have to proudly display on their caste that they are particular caste or community
Most likely it's a trap. It's a conspiracy to break the harmony in India.
Reservation should be on the basis of income category
Economy reservation is not possible bcoz no private employee will come up with his true income
