Inside ICE: The fight against Trump's deportations | DW Documentary
Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is facing resistance across the United States. And not just from migrants. Local residents are fighting back, determined to stop new ICE detention centers from being built in their own backyards.
Rodney Taylor was just two years old when he arrived in the US from Liberia on a medical visa. By the age of 10, both his legs had been amputated. Georgia became his home, where he raised a family and worked as a barber. But his immigration status remained unresolved.
In early 2025, Rodney was arrested by officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The arrest was based on a burglary conviction from his youth. The state of Georgia had already pardoned him for that offence in 2010.
Rodney spent 15 months behind bars at the Stewart Detention Center in southern Georgia. Today, he’s back with his family. But he faces deportation. And his future in the country he has called home for almost his entire life hangs in the balance.
Meanwhile, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) north, the Trump administration was planning a massive new ICE detention center to hold up to 10,000 people. But in Social Circle, a small town in the heart of Trump country, the plans sparked an unexpected backlash. A progressive activist and a Trump supporter found themselves on the same side of a political battle, united by one goal: to stop the detention center from being built.

I came here as a child and got my resident card when I was a teenager. I don’t feel safe anymore and NO ONE should feel that way! I don’t approve of coming here illegally like I did as a child BUT I don’t think it should cost thousands of dollars and take years to go through the process. When you are escaping wars like I did as a kid you don’t have years to wait! Trump killed any change of immigration reform so he could have something to run on in 2024!
Nothing works better than putting fear in people! NOTHING!!
When Obama was president they praised ICE
WE, THE TAXPAYERS, JUST WANT LEGAL… EVERYONE IS WELCOME, AS LONG AS YOU'RE HERE LEGALLY.
Just got my ice money, bought a new 60k truck, was detained for 3 months without outside contact. It was worth it, now I going to drive around waiting for them to stop and detain me again so I can get paid again. We natives are going to get paid one way or another. Go ice .
BOO.
Some years ago, I lived on the outskirts of Social Circle. I liked it somewhat, but I wasn't there long enough to make many friends. I was always aware of the political attitude (mostly now called MAGA) of those around me. It is definitely a Trump town. I moved away nearly a decade ago, and never intend to move back again.
Euros defending criminals again
Keep up the great work, ICE. This is what Europe needs.
The comments here are pretty wild.
Obama deported more than Trump.
Stop saying that you come from or belong to a sovereign state. Stop accepting colonial title to yourself. Remember that title is a legal handle to ownership.
End Global Apartheid. Xign MONOPOLY = SLAVERY on your monopoly money.
ICE actors will end up in jail.
None of these people cared when Obama deported even more people during his terms. Trump isn't even likely to one up Obam's first term numbers, even with ICE and how much it may seem like they're doing. I have PLENTY of criticism for this administration, but these people are so performative and dishonest.
Never have open borders
Set up an office in other countries and ask people to sign up if they want to immigate.
This could include single mothers or construction workers or farm labor.
In Canada if you work for 4 years and return home , you can apply to become permanent.
People send money back home and also buy a lot of stuff to take home to places like Peru.
Temporary status people from Haiti are working hard. Women from Central America are working in food processing factories or cleaning hotels.
Both sides are wrong. Democrats want people to come and Republicans are afraid of being replaced.
Do it legally and allow the cities to arrange for schools and other services.
This way you screen out bad people and put human smuggling out of business.
The other solution is to improve the standard of living in other countries.
Shame on you, GERMAN government channel to trivialize your former secret police that killed so many people.
SHAME!!!
Trump appreciates DW’s support.
The Gestapo’s attitude to foreign workers harden into utter pitilessness.
So glad we have a President using ICE for it's intended purpose. Deport, Deport, Deport.
good morning backpacks
