The US Army Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, is where future field artillery soldiers undergo advanced individual training to prepare for their roles in the “King of Battle.” As one of the 20 largest military installations in the world, Fort Sill covers over 93,000 acres and is home to over 13,000 active-duty personnel.
Field artillery soldiers are trained in five different military occupational specialties: fire control specialist, cannon crew member, fire support specialist, firefinder radar operator, and multiple launch rocket system crew member. During a four-day visit to Fort Sill, we witnessed how soldiers in each specialty work together to provide field artillery support in battle.
From learning how to operate the $4.3 million howitzers to understanding the intricacies of field artillery tactics, these soldiers undergo rigorous training to ensure they are prepared for the demands of their roles.
