Why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer | Us & Them | DW Documentary
As societies get more prosperous, more and more people are unable to afford many basic needs. In South Africa and in the UK, Liz and Sakhumzi believe in the virtues of capitalism, whilst Jamie and Princess struggle to make ends meet.
Despite the UK being one of the richest countries in the world, 20% of its population – around 14 million people – live in poverty. That includes Jamie, who is unemployed and relies on food banks. Meanwhile Liz, a London socialite, believes that anyone can enjoy success. Jamie would like to work, but after a devastating car accident, he finds it difficult to get the right job that allows him to pay for rising rent costs.
South Africa is one of the most unequal countries in the world with an unemployment rate of 30%. Despite the difficult conditions, Sakhumzi, a self-made millionaire, runs several local businesses, employing hundreds in the township of Soweto. Princess, a mother of four, however, struggles to find a stable job, making it impossible to pay her daughter’s school fees. She dreams of building a home where the family would be able to live together one day.
Such inequality not only has serious personal consequences, it also poses problems for the general well-being of society, costing billions in damage to the economy, communities, and individuals.

Taxes goes in unnecessary wars and interference in other parts of world so how poor will b elevated? Its simple to understand
corruption is the only thing holding South Africa back.
Just don't hate and don't feel jealous. Remember, inequality is not poverty. The poor of south Africa are better than the rich of Sudan. Better to have little and rejoice in peace than have much and live in strife. The rich man next door is a trap for you to feel jealous but just be a rebel of nature and cheer him on instead and draw inspiration from him to be as rich or richer. Its ok if you cant be like them so long as you do your best.
If it is of any comfort, just know, everyone, rich or poor have their own challenges. Do you realize poor people have more to laugh about than the rich? Sometimes I actually fear the life of riches because of the potential boredom and stresses it might bring. I am not a very good man, but I have managed to avoid the feelings of jealousy. Even if I have no car, when I see the best car I smile and feel glad and say, "wow, the owner must be having a thrill!"
When I see a classy mansion I say, "Yes, my dream house, did he steal my idea? I hope he is in good health of body and mind to enjoy living in such a house."
So honestly, don't resent the rich, anyone can be rich. If a man is more hardworking or more disciplined than most of us, doesn't he deserve to be richer than us? Similarly, lets draw inspiration from the white people, they have great work ethics and sense of teamwork. Don't they deserve nicer things by virtue of their better ways of life? You may be poor today and rich tomorrow. Throwing stones at the rich is like throwing stones to a glass house when you live in one.
Finally, if we all were at the same financial level, who would inspire the young people to work harder and have better discipline? I have seen what the lack of role models can do to a society. And I have seen the joy of the young broke people when they get motivated to achieve the things that are the preserve of the rich. Extreme poverty is appalling, inequality is not as bad, except for when there are people who can not afford basic needs around.
Try playing Monopoly but start with no money…
Capitalism + Greed + The theory, economic growth == development.
That American at the pay what you feel cafe seems such a great person. Hats off to him
Generating wealth can be complicated. Being poor is simple. Entropy is a law of nature, we always facing obstacles. I rather listen to someone explaining wealth than poverty. I am tired of hearing about how i am a victim as a black South African 🇿🇦
The first question should have been – what is capitalism.
And them, the rich, control the government. Control the media. Control the courts. Control democracy. Control mass immigration and control women’s bodies to produce babies to remain poor in the nasty capitalist system.
one answer, rich can maoe more money by investing their money with lower interest rates loan. in the otger hand poor cannot even afford to buy a car without low interest rates. so as i always say being poor is expensive in this world.
if all you had to do to get rich is work hard, far more people would be millionaires. It is the biggest scam ever
The people who think this current system is "fair" and "anyone can achieve anything" ONLY say so because they benefit right now AS IS.
great video overall, although I wish you would have called out the generational wealth the British lady clearly has benefited from. She's talking like she worked so hard, like anyone can "run away and open a disco". She's complaining about others being entitled when they are scraping by, and she was clearly born with a silver spoon
Capitalism is designed this way to benefit the rich and exploit the rest. It’s a pyramid which eventually will collapse through wars and exploitation of earths resources….. Then another system will come in place, however because we’re human we’re always going to mess it up.
You have to define poor first that’s always the first mistake it’s never actually recognized who’s actually poor. Your richest are your poorest believe it or not they’re the ones monopolizing others time and space they’re profiting from monopolizing. The poorest have the most time to actually think and make their own difference for themselves they have a physiology and skills skills that haven’t been fkd with that require their attention if they notice. Awareness is always a goldmine it’s never the fkn money. Rich would be humiliated if ever confronted with the truth of how they feed themselves, so you’ll notice it’s never dared brought up the using of people instead it’s exaggerated set up like a brag. Fact is “the rich” have no right to be rich from others, that’s merely a law ego made for itself.
Rich people get rich thanks to infrastructures and services they don't pay taxes for but those are paid by middle and lower class workers. TAX THE RICH NOW!
Because the poor aren't killing and eating the rich. It's quite simple.
TAX. THE. RICH.
Rich people evade taxes, can corrupt judges and bend the law to accomodate their needs. There must be a limit on persobal wealth, a billion is more than what a human being can spend in more than 100 years
The woman saying everyone has an opportunity is a flat out lie….you can work your life away and without someone in a position to give you that opportunity , it doesn’t happen.our workplace has become and is who you know vs what you know..the positions once worked for and earned are now bestowed based on more personal reasons
Happy are the poor since the kingdom of god belongs to them ,as for the rich! Jesus said you have had your reward and there is no other ,,read between the lines. Great video love DW hear from UK 👍🙏
Fok JA❤😂🎉
Socialist gen z here their many reasons ne'o libe'rialism, capitalism, n'eo colo'nialism, impe'rialism, etc their many factors that play into this. its also deregulation' cutting taxes on the rich' etc. Also sorry for the ' yt ha'tes me its to pre'vent ta'ke do'wn by Yt
It is how it is
Finland does not have deposits of diamonds, gold, coal, iron ore, but it is a rich country South Africa has all the minerals, but millions of people are poor
The same old war. Class-conflict. The rich do well, thanks to those many wonnabees.
If you work , you don`t have time to make money !
The poor don't get poorer…in the last 50 years the poor also got richer and there are less poor people in the world. Stop spreading marxist nonsense…
Neither I'm rich nor poor.
Yes this capitalism has got its worst spiral effects and the riches have amassed wealth more than what they require & that's where this income inequality arises.
If the profits were shared considerably reasonable among the working class, the disparity wouldn't have seen its worst form.
Being a middle class guy, I never extend alms to beggars who don't wish to work or put efforts and at the same I don't bargain much & even pay extra on the transactions with the working class for the service/business they do & in that way even if you're paying some extra bucks than what the required pay, let it be it, in this way as an individual you're making efforts to shorten this income disparity.
Capitalism is designed to create wealth for the majority cause it's based on scarcity than abundance.. privatization of sources meant for common good loke health, housing and food security is making the world poorer.. when money talks-greed listens.. hence most of the hardest working people in the world are poor
Issue here is Capitalism.
When someone takes bribe for their service along with their regular job salary then it is a crime.
When someone takes kickback for giving their support to a policy decision then it is also considered crime. BUT
when someone takes huge profits from a product then it is not considered crime. This way, many people are making lots of money by hostaging both the natural and man-made products which is not ethical. For example: a food which is staple i.e., eggs/rice but some businessmen are taking huge profits when these products are in short supply and things get hugely profitable when it comes to luxury or other essential products.
Because the rich who are already rich and aspiring to be rich have devised new ways of exploiting the rest of us in collaboration with the politicians and unscrupulous opportunist people.
There is no rich without the poor!
The only way is to let incompetent ones as is, so they'll degrade over time. Intervention will only extend poverty over genrations, as well as painful life.
The system was in place as a game of competition and innovation. But with the lobbying, bribing and what not….
Its like playing monopoly where every street is already owned, and your only goal is to make sure that $200 dollars gets you to the next pass off start.
Funny thing is, in some areas you actually go to jail if you can’t pay….
The system is rigged, the statistics we use are manipulated or don’t represent the full truth. Its all bs at this point….
The capitalist has been the backbone behind several innovations in the world. Yet my question is…. Is all these innovation needed for mankind or have those been forced upon us? In my opinion, the capitalists have promoted consumerism and environmental destruction. The capitalist have used their riches to bribe/ sponsor governments to fulfil their agenda, to retain wealth and to enslave the poor. Classic examples of the major impact capitalism has had on this world are; environmental destruction, and inequality in living standards e.g. wages. Nike and other industries exploiting the human capital in Asia and paying them low wages… and so on… However, I believe there needs to be a balance. Too much capitalism or too much socialism is not healthy. There should be a right balance between them.
Seems you have been seeing some if Gary Stevenson YouTube Videos
WOW..What do you think about,,Zero growth in houses on the market.Only the Elites can afford them anyway..You will see a very big difference in the workers!!!
Everyone’s more power who wants less ? Human nature is fascinating everyone has reason for it more 💰
Capitalism destroys the mother earth and criminalizes the whole society by making nonsense laws to benefit the richest people… My simple question to those who support capitalism is what we need to survive food or technology ?….
Poor people need more financial education but that won’t fix it completely.
