A Night Inside Kenya Airways 787: The Crew’s World Passengers Don’t See

We begin at the bustling Bangkok airport, where I meet a dedicated team of 10 cabin crew members and 3 pilots, all ready for the unique challenges ahead. This flight involves a crew change, as the aircraft arrives from Guangzhou, China, providing a rare chance to witness the detailed handover process.
The Inflight Manager, Mohammad, guides us through critical pre-flight tasks. From finalizing catering orders and ensuring cabin cleanliness to reviewing passenger manifests, every duty is meticulously executed. The crew also conducts vital aircraft checks, ensuring that all systems—from water supply to waste management—are functioning perfectly before we even take off.
Meanwhile, in the cockpit, our skilled pilots prepare for the journey ahead, while a ground engineer addresses any last-minute maintenance items, ensuring the Boeing 787 is ready for its long-haul flight.
Once airborne, we embark on an extensive 8-hour and 45-minute flight to Nairobi. Midway through the journey, I get an exclusive look at the crew rest area located at the rear of the Dreamliner. This cozy space, equipped with six bunks, allows the crew to recharge during long-haul operations, ensuring they’re alert and ready to assist passengers.
As dawn breaks, we land in Nairobi, preparing for my onward journey to Juba, South Sudan.
