BookTok and Gen Z – Are young people saving the book market? | DW Documentary
The digital book club BookTok got its start during the pandemic in 2020. Today, it is a big success, used primarily by young women who are fans of a particular literary genre – so-called “New Adult,” or romance novels for young adults.
The new books have striking, glossy covers, their language is easy to follow, the stories are romantic, exciting and full of eroticism from a female perspective. But young women aren’t just engaging in online discussions about their favorite books. Book blogger Jess ‘miss.Nerdstagram’ also meets her followers in person at events like the Book Ball at Namedy Castle in Germany.
Author Kim Leopold from the German town of Rheine also frequently takes to the road to be close to her fans. She’s an ‘own voice’ author writing about her own personal experience, in stories that satisfy the hunger for authentic narratives. Topics such as mental health, body positivity and ADHD are close to her heart. Kim is nervously awaiting the release of her latest book, which ventures into new territory: the focus is no longer on a single woman, but on a young married couple. Will this story also resonate with her fans?
The Riekes are living their dream in Jever: right in the center of town, they’ve opened a shop dedicated to the New Adult phenomenon. The young entrepreneurs are also a couple in their private lives and post clips on social media as a comedy duo. For them, just as for Kim and Jess, attending the Frankfurt Book Fair is the highlight of the year. But traditional critics at events like these are generally skeptical of these modern literary formats, no matter how vibrant they may be. Can the couple hold their own?

"booktok" everything is said, no amount of narrative fantasy can help here.
Most of actual gen Z cannot write a simple sentence properly, so i have few doubts about your narrative.
"Reading" and its their 30th fanfic about ceo billionaire SA'ing a 18 yr old secretary.
Or sometimes theres a new variety where the ceo billionaire is not even human but a beast
First positive coverage about Gen Z I noticed
Confused. Why just the other week there were articles saying Gen Z does not read?
I'm gen x, i love reading!
if you like to read them you are not a real gen z
Pretty sure they are referring to Gen Z in Europe as DW in a German media outlet.
Heavens, if these are typical young Germans they've put on a load of kgs since I was last there 25 years ago.
We are cooked.
Maybe in Europe, but I don't see this in the Americas of Asia. One can always hope…
I hope so!! I write and need readers. 🥰
