Burnham Must Prioritise Defence Over Welfare, Says Kemi Badenoch
In a striking commentary on the pressing financial decisions facing the government, Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the Opposition, has issued a clarion call for Andy Burnham to prioritise national defence over welfare spending. Speaking during an interview on Times Radio with Kate McCann and Stig Abell, Badenoch asserted that the current state of national security necessitates a reevaluation of budget allocations.
Badenoch stressed the urgency of the situation, claiming that a failure to address what she identifies as “effectively a national security threat” could jeopardise the safety and stability of the nation. The conversation highlighted the rising concerns regarding threats from various quarters, which Badenoch believes demand immediate financial attention.
“The welfare bill is extensive, and we cannot afford to remain complacent in the face of potential dangers,” she said. “If Andy Burnham will not bring down the welfare bill to allocate funds for defence, then there should be a general election.”
Her comments ignite a broader dialogue on government priorities, particularly in times of heightened threat levels. Badenoch’s insistence that defence should take precedence over welfare spending reflects a growing sentiment among certain political factions that fiscal responsibility should align closely with national security requirements.
As political dynamics evolve, the debate over budget allocations is set to take centre stage, challenging leaders to justify their spending priorities to increasingly discerning constituents. Will Burnham heed Badenoch’s warning and adjust the financial roadmap accordingly, or will he stand by the current welfare framework as a vital pillar of societal support?
This volatile issue promises to shape the political landscape in the coming months, with implications not just for government budgets but for public safety and trust in leadership as well. With Badenoch clearly positioned, the onus is now on Burnham to respond.

The PM is the person with their finger on the Trident nuclear button. The country should decided who has their finger on that button.
The welfare bill rose significantly under the Tory governments. Governments that Badenoch was a minister in. Policies and budgets that Badenoch approved. It was also under the Tories that our defensive capabilities were reduced to (if not beyond) the bare minimum that anyone would tolerate. Welfare bill up, Defence down under the Tories.
So essentially, Badenoch is demanding that Labour cleans up the absolute mess that she and her buddies created for the country. Shameless!
Are you stupid enough to fall for this?
Let's be honest. General election will result in ether reform or restore winning. That's why she doesn't want one.
"Democracy" in action.
Welfare lies on colonial guilt!
Tax the rich and take care of the people! Billionaires are the enemy not immigrants! Wake up!
She is good!. Common sense yes please.
Prioritise defence over tax breaks for billionaires and corrupt gifts and grifts for Tory peers😡🙏
Kemi is the only political party leader who is competent to run the country
She doesn’t want a general election because she knows the conservatives will lose it. You can see it in her face. If there is a general election we stand a good chance of having a new type of government under reform because everybody else is sick and tired of labour and the conservatives that if reform wins
Reform supporter here but i wouldn't be unhappy if Kemi was in the hot-seat, if her predecessors had half of her patriotism, grit and commonsense we wouldn't be in this socialist nightmare now.
Make welfare easy to get, even if you haven't ever paid tax, and the parasite's will take more! No attempt to work should mean reduced 'free money'!
Between 2010 and 2024, the Conservative government cut the size of the British Army by approximately 27%.
Between 2010 and 2024, the Conservative government reduced full-time UK Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel by approximately 24%.
6:00 Analysis of official data from the Treasury and Ministry of Defence showed that there was a 22 per cent reduction in resource spending of £9.4bn, from £41.9bn in 2010/11 to £32.5bn to the planned spend for this financial year: 2024.
Labour is increasing defence spending from 2.3% of national income (GDP) to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with an ambition to reach 3% of GDP by the next parliament.
An Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) report from 2001 found that Mr Major’s Government from 1992-1997 cut defence spending by an average of 3% per year in real terms – that is to say after accounting for inflation. Between 1979 and 1997, defence spending was cut by an average of 0.2% per year, the same report said.
Sorry, but Kemi is a good leader why?
JOBS create wealth and tax revenues…you need to tax everything on Amazon by 500% to incentivise people to go to shops , SLASH business rates by 70% for small shops and businesses. The NHS should only be for low earners and the unemployed as a safety net…average earners should have to pay to see the doctor and for perscriptions and high earners should all have to go private…national service to sort out the manpower problems in the armed forces etc.
Milking it for other 2 years then ?
What a fool. Ditch the nuclear subs as they are useless in asymmetric warfare and have Trump "kill switch". Then invest the money saved in something useful.
Betting is now firming up for Burnham and Labour to win a coming general election. The left are seen United while the right are squabbling like kids.
Increase taxation on the most wealthy to pay for increased defence spending – after all, they're the ones who benefit the most from a strong defence.
"Trickle Down" hasn't worked for the country & increasing inequality is shredding the fabric of many societies (the USA & Russia being two prime examples).
Wonder why kemi dont fancy a genral election 👀😂
We must elect a prime minister of Great Britain!! NOT OF ISRAEL!!!
Not the Tories again……..
Labour are lucky to have such an irrelevant opposition
BURNHAM BETTER START GOING TO THE GYM ………… TO BE PREPARED FOR THE RUMBLE WITH 'BAD BADENOCH '……………………..
Tories and Labour are two sides of the exact same thing. This here is a prime case of correct message, wrong messenger.
hes just starmer in a different body, more taxes, more migrants, more debt, more job losses, more DEI, more two tier justice, leaning more and more towards islam, phe oppression of brits and the destruction of their history and culture will continue. i despair we need a genral election but that wont happen because they know they would be out on their arses. the greens have taken the block islamic vote even after giving them our children they have lost that. but what have the greens offered them thats juicier than that
I like Kemi.
Why? The Conservatives shafted the military, hollowing it out is the view of experts. Now the Conservatives expect Labour to fix the mess the Conservatives left behind again. Welfare spending increased under the Conservatives now suddenly after 14 years of Conservative mismanagement welfare is supposedly easy to fix.
Kemi is just another bulkshite sideline commentator with easy solutions when she didn't have the solutions when in power.
yeah why is she keeping on that process question…silly…ask more substantive questions…we the viewers understand..move on
Who is this interviewer wasting time on stupid questions?! 😂 Shes intolerable and not listening to what Kemis saying.
Well done Kemi!
The welfare bill is our state pensions. Why would anyone with a right mind endorse giving over our state pensions to a bunch of weapons manufacturers owned by billionaire capitalist parasites.
LABOUR HAS A STRATEGY…………….SLOW THE PROCESS DOWN……………………BAD BADENOCH NEEDS TO START TURNING OVER STONES
BANGING DOORS……………AND PUNCH HARDER
