Cabinet Ministers Express Concern Over Ed Miliband as Burnham’s Chancellor Pick
In a revealing discussion on Times Radio, political editor Steven Swinford highlighted deep divisions within the cabinet regarding Andy Burnham’s potential appointment of Ed Miliband as Chancellor. As tensions rise, insiders are voicing concerns that such a decision could further fracture party unity and complicate relations with the financial markets.
Swinford describes the situation as a “risk” for Burnham, suggesting that Miliband’s track record may not align with the goals of a cohesive cabinet. With reports of ministers already engaging in heated debates over the implications of such an appointment, the air is thick with the possibility of a bitter showdown.
The stakes are high in this unfolding drama, as party leaders grapple with how to balance internal dynamics against the backdrop of broader economic concerns. Burnham, who is carving out his vision for leadership, must navigate these turbulent waters carefully to avoid alienating key factions.
Swinford’s insights, shared in conversation with Kate McCann and Stig Abell, reflect a growing sense of urgency among party members. Analysts fear that bringing Miliband into the fold might not only exacerbate existing rifts but also raise questions about the party’s credibility in the eyes of investors and the public.
As the clock ticks down, all eyes will be on Burnham’s next move and the potential ramifications for the Labour party. With tensions mounting, only time will tell if the former party leader can quell the dissent or if further discord is on the horizon.

A silver spoon socialist; never had a proper job, doesn’t understand how working people think or the hardships that they suffer. Only interested in socialist theory. He reminds me of that other hypocritical Silver spoon socialist Tony Benn and would be as much of a disaster to the UK economy as Benn was.
Milliband will go down in history as the fanatical ideologue who destroyed the British energy industry, jobs and economy.
All sounds rather familiar doesn`t it. Not being ready for government despite having years to prepare.
Surely after all Burnham`s stated desire to be prime minister for so long now, needs until September to be ready. If he ain`t ready by July 17th, then two more months wont make a blind bit of difference.
It already looks as if the train`s brakes have failed.
How can Miliband be ‘Business friendly’ when his net-zero policy is killing businesses with the highest energy cost in the world? How does he expect UK businesses to compete on the world stage?
No!! He will be WORSE than Reeves!!
Nobody likes Miliband. He's so awful.
British people aren’t being fooled buy this green rubbish when the U.K produces less than one percent of world’s pollution and the U.K citizens pay more than any other country in the world it’s a con ?
Hes definitely radical but not the way he thinks
We do not whot him 😮😅😮
It would take someone like Farage or Kemi to bring about change; even John Cleese could do better than Starmer—after all, there’s Zelensky in Ukraine, a former comedian.
Milligan’s is a complete imbecile. He has totally screwed the country on net zero madness, killed an industry and left us with the most expensive energy prices in the world…by far! Perfect for the job then!
No FK way! That idiot couldn’t run a bath!
Windy Millband, part of the problem….interesting days ahead.
Hang on
1 week as an MP
Then PM
Ur having a laugh
General Election
Now
Miliband will handle the economy like he handles eating a bacon sandwich. Badly
So. On day 1 Burnham is not even an MP. On day 2 he is an MP and seemingly looks like he'll be PM! That says something massive about the UK's political system ! What a mess.
He ever becomes chancellor watch the country revolt and get Thieves out as well
You can't use a rational thought process to predict what Burnham will do because if he was rational, he wouldn't be a socialist. The best you can do is work out the rational choices and assume he will do the opposite.
The next government should introduce a treason act, which applies retroactively, and allows us to put the likes of Starmer, Hermer, Miliband on trial.
I must pay more attention to who is making a claim rather than just the catchy headline. I start reading the comments and replying to some of them and only then do I look at the 'source'.
Had I seen this was "the times" channel in time, all of that could have been avoided…lesson learnt 😑
WHAT WE WANT..DEMAND, IS A GENERAL ELECTION. The populace are utterly sick of being trod on and ignored. Burnham has no mandate to govern and silly bland would destroy what’s left of the economy. If he gets the nod, we should all down tools and refuse to comply and cancel all your direct debits, this would destroy unwanted burnham and silly bland and the clown show that is the Labour Party.
Big respect to Karl, he stood on the principal of the Jury trials issue and lost the whip for it, hes quite open about loosing his seat, came accross as quite everything Starmer is not.
Lets see what happens in due course.
Thng I like about Turner is at no point did I hear him say, let me deal with the last question first, or Starmers go to Let me deal with that directly…lucid down to earth and human.
We need more politicians like this..
