Canada’s Time Change Takes an Unexpected Turn This Weekend
As the chill of autumn settles over the nation, Canadians are faced with an unprecedented twist in their annual ritual of setting the clocks back. On Saturday night, Eastern Canadians will follow the age-old practice of reverting an hour to mark the end of daylight saving time. However, for many in the West, this time-honored tradition is about to change — quite literally.
In a significant shift, Western provinces and several territories are now choosing to opt out of the clock change, resulting in a split across the country. This evolution marks a departure from the uniformity that Canadians have long adhered to, igniting discussions about the practicality and impact of such decisions. Regions like British Columbia, Alberta, and parts of the prairies are leading the charge, with a growing consensus that the semi-annual changing of the clocks does more harm than good. With more areas taking matters into their own hands, the confusion surrounding the time change is palpable.
As communities brace for this new reality, the implications are manifold. Travel schedules, business hours, and even family gatherings now stand to be affected as Canadians grapple with the discrepancies between time zones. For many, the change raises essential questions about the efficacy of daylight saving time itself and whether the benefits still outweigh the complications.
In her latest report, Sarah Macdonald dissects the potential fallout of this decision, exploring how Canadians across the country are navigating the puzzling landscape. From mixed reactions among residents to logistical challenges experienced by businesses, this weekend’s time change is poised to be a historic one, stirring conversations that may reverberate into the future.
With the ripple effects of this decision yet to fully unfold, Canadians are left wondering what the new landscape of timekeeping will look like in the coming months and years. As the clocks tick down to the big change, one thing is clear: Canada’s approach to time is evolving, and it’s a topic that warrants attention.

Leave it alone! Oh please spare me!
This is stupid. It's far more worse to go back and forth changing times. For no reason. So what is a little bit more dark it's a little bit more cold whatever. You get used to it. This has to be the dumbest video I've ever seen
Stop complaining about everything. When there was a change there were yearly complaints about that.
U 0:50 Umm, there is such a thing as electric lights, ms. Vancouver Coastal Health. People who have to go to work in the morning already get up in the dark to do things like shower, breakfast, put on make-up, take transit which takes alot more time. Friday's sunrise was only minutes before 8a.m. Standard time would make it 7a.m., for Vancouver. In 2 months it will dtill be dark st 8a.m. standard time. Your darkness fearmongering is stupid. And what about going a little bit north? It just gets darker. You are out to lunch.
How much warmer one hour gets? Really?
If they were going to choose one time , they should have chosen standard time (not daylight saving time). 🤦🏼♂️
Just stick to one time and stop changing.
So annoying and silly.
People are clearly not understanding that when we wake up in the mornings we need sunlight in our eyes as soon as possible to trigger biological changes in melatonin and cortisol.
It isn't simply a matter of "we already wake up in darkness in Winter". Adopting Permanent Daylight Savings means we are waking up in darkness in Fall, Winter, and Spring. We experience darker mornings for approximately double the amount of time than if we adopted Permanent Standard Time which can have significant health impacts.
It's better than switching back and forth, but Permanent Standard Time has the best health outcomes.
In Winter you go to work in the dark and go home in the dark. The time change was only for those who don’t work.
Coastal health is a joke anyways, these experts are talking crap…its 1 hour, get over it
it should be all of canada or none
Sounds like the news editors have already made a decision on the cons of this non-change; where were they while it was being debated?
extra hour tho
If we woke up
And went to sleep
Fruit the light we would sleep at 4:30
In the winter
If we had changed to standard time we'd be doing the same thing, only like a month later. It's not instant doom and gloom.
You'd think the sun was the only source of light judging by all the media attention regarding daylight & darkness. 80% of Canadians live near 49°N latitude. Not that far North. Scandinavia is laughing right now. Plus, we do have other sources of light; it's not pitch black when the sun sets.
And before we were told of the multiple problems of time change!🫣🤪
Sooooo happy to not change the clocks anymore
It’s so stupid
Just pick a time and keep and I’m glad we finally are
Please drive slowly and watch for kids & other pedestrians in the early morning.
As a Manitoban I think we botched this entire time change thing badly. We are in the same time zone as Saskatchewan so we should be on the same time as they are 🤦♂️
Imagine waking up to that alarm sound. I had one back in 2000. It was a gift, that's why I didn't smash it.
Carney liberal nonsense from
Global liberal propaganda
Wary about time change don't wary about Canada joining UN , I hate Canadian news , i hate Canadian government propaganda
It’s like the news outlet tells us what to think. Can we have at least some topics where we allowed to have an opinion.
Finally it's happening.
And they have been warning us that the sudden hour shift causes issues, which we all know about.
The world owes alot to the people on the midnight shifts and MAD shifts then eh? Dark is important. A few hours in the morning wont hurt you.
Why is it for years i heard that changing the clocks back or ahead an hour twice per year was causing health issues? Now not changing the clocks is also bad? As a kid i hated having to get up an hour early and it took a lot of time to get used to that. I know when i leave in the morning its going to get lighter. Would it be nicer to have more daylight? Sure eould but in the northwest ontario winters are darker but soon the snow will brighten up the landscape and on clear nights with a bright moon you can see quite well. Im ok not changing the clocks.
Sorry that hour is not going to make a big difference, I am happy this is happening, go for a walk at lunch.
I hate that we’re losing the clock change tradition. We’ve had enough changes recently. Let me have my “I’m late because of daylight savings time” tradition.
The whole country needs to stick to the same timezone to avoid confusion.
If the media says it's bad its probably good. History bares me out. After all it's a modern invention.
Two things that have never changed throughout the billions of years the earth has existed. Sunrise and sunset, annd man's little invention of time has zero bearing on this phenomenon.
I'm like 75% sure this isn't a skit. This is peak comedy
