LeBlanc, who has been a member of cabinet since 2015, now takes on the role of minister of finance and intergovernmental affairs after being sworn in at Rideau Hall on Monday.
Freeland, who previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, announced her resignation earlier in the day. In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Freeland explained that she felt the only “honest and viable path” was for her to step down from her role in the cabinet after Trudeau expressed that he no longer wanted her to serve as finance minister.
