A devastating landslide at an illegal gold mine on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia has left at least 23 people dead, with 35 still missing. The landslide, which was triggered by heavy rain in the district of Suwawa in Gorontalo province, has prompted a massive search and rescue effort by Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.
One survivor, 40-year-old gold miner Rikson Buhungo, shared his harrowing experience of being swept away by the landslide and dragged for about 50 meters. Despite being rescued, Buhungo suffered injuries to his legs and upper body. He recounted that in his camp, 10 people tragically lost their lives, with only two survivors. The fate of those in neighboring camps remains uncertain.
The search and rescue operation, involving a helicopter and hundreds of rescuers, is ongoing as authorities work tirelessly to locate the missing individuals. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the need for stringent safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
