Doberman owners know that these dogs are tough, loyal, and intelligent. They are also known for their sensitive stomachs, which can become even more delicate during stressful events, such as giving birth to puppies. In a recent episode of Incredible Dr. Pol, a four-year-old Doberman named Aspen began experiencing diarrhea and vomiting just two days after giving birth to her ninth litter of puppies.
Her concerned owner brought her to Dr. Pol’s clinic as the symptoms persisted for several days. Dr. Lisa Jones, the clinic’s veterinarian, immediately took Aspen in for an X-ray to make sure there was no blockage or other serious issues. Luckily, the X-ray revealed that she had a lot of gas in her intestines, and the home treatment overcorrected her diarrhea into constipation.
Dr. Jones prescribed antibiotics and nausea medication, and Aspen’s owner was relieved to learn that these symptoms were likely just a result of the stress of giving birth. Despite the scary experience, she was reassured that her beloved Aspen would recover quickly with the medication.
Doberman owners should take note that stress can impact their dog’s digestive health, and rapid changes in diet or medication can lead to additional complications. It’s always best to consult with a veterinarian when your pup is experiencing digestive issues. And in the case of Aspen, it was a happy ending as she was able to return to her puppies and continue being an excellent mother.
