Summary:

“Drive A Crooked Road” is a 1954 crime drama that weaves an intricate tale of ambition, love, and revenge. At its center is Eddie Shannon, portrayed by Mickey Rooney, a small-statured yet spirited auto mechanic with dreams of racing. His aspirations are ignited by the allure of the glamorous racing world, but life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes entangled in a criminal scheme.

Eddie’s encounter with the captivating Barbara Matthews, played by Dianne Foster, leads him down a treacherous path. Enamored by her charm, he naively agrees to serve as the getaway driver in a Palm Springs bank heist orchestrated by Barbara’s affluent boyfriend, Steve Norris (Kevin McCarthy), and his partner, Harold (Jack Kelly). The promise of romance and adventure quickly spirals into chaos as Eddie finds himself cast aside after the job.

The emotional stakes rise when Eddie confronts Barbara about her deceitful role in the heist. A heart-wrenching moment occurs when she confesses her feelings for him, further complicating their relationship. However, as Eddie becomes a liability to the criminals, Steve orders a hit on him, prompting Eddie’s desperate fight for survival and a thirst for revenge.

“Drive A Crooked Road” deftly captures the essence of classic noir, revealing how dreams can quickly unravel under the weight of betrayal. With a gripping narrative and strong performances, particularly from Rooney, the film examines themes of ambition, loyalty, and the dire consequences of misplaced trust. Balancing tension and emotion, it leaves the viewer pondering the lengths one would go for love and the road behind their dreams.
