Tragedy Strikes Vancouver: Mass Casualty Event Claims 11 Lives
Messages of condolence are flooding in from across the nation and around the globe following a mass casualty event in Vancouver on Saturday night. Authorities have confirmed that 11 people are dead, with ages ranging from five to 65, after an SUV crashed into a crowd attending a Filipino street festival. Many more victims remain hospitalized, and the community is in shock as the details of the tragedy unfold. A suspect is in custody, with police indicating that they do not believe this to be an act of terrorism.
In the aftermath of this devastating event, Liberal Leader Mark Carney temporarily assumed the role of prime minister as a gesture of solidarity. Initially scheduled to lead a strategic air raid across six cities in hopes of capturing additional parliamentary seats, Carney’s plans took a backseat to the urgent needs arising from this tragedy. Mackenzie Gray provides further insight into the shifting political landscape as leaders respond to the unfolding crisis.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives are facing scrutiny for their handling of the situation. In the wake of the Vancouver tragedy, they reposted a controversial social media video that attempted to link the incident to the Liberal government’s approach to crime. This move drew significant backlash, particularly given that authorities have emphasized the suspect’s mental health issues as an aggravating factor. As Touria Izri reports, the party has not provided answers to growing questions regarding the rationale behind their actions.
The tragedy in Vancouver is compounded by a separate incident occurring in Iran, where a massive explosion in a southern port city has resulted in rising death tolls. This explosion coincided with delicate nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States in Oman, raising concerns among Iranian authorities. Candice Cole offers an analysis of how these two seemingly disconnected events are impacting international relations.
As Vancouver mourns, the focus remains on supporting the victims and their families, alongside healing the community that has been irrevocably changed by this heart-wrenching event.

90 % of guns came through border
This is a horrible trend worldwide — senseless violence.
Sickening to see the conservatives using this to build up votes in a last stitch effort. Disgustingly selfish and lacking the basic empathy needed to lead our country. Sure speaks to the correlation between conservatives and mindset of trump and republicans. 💔 No one deserves to be used as a political pawn. Heart goes out to the beautiful Filipino people.
Condolence to the Victims n my deepest sympathy to the families…This horrible incident can be prevented if we don't cut, cut, cut the mental hospitals..too many depressions r happening now plus drugs… It's not Vancouver anymore like 60 yrs ago…Police n politicians must locked up this sick person to prevent this kind of massacre…too sad…
I live in a small Saskatchewan city that is DOMINATED by Filipinos. They are shocked and devastated by this news, and I send to all of the families Yorkton's support and condolences
Shame on Canada for not preventing this tragedy! Only good to tax and rip off workers!
Carmageddon
Conservative only tells people who to pint the fingers, attack, but he has no plan.
Way to many friggin’ politicians in this news clip
Still voting Liberals and NDP huh
Its insane to vote liberal (again) and expect Healthcare reform. The liberals are why its difficult to obtain a family Doctor today!
Vote for change, not a continuation of the last 10 years!
Ty media for taking down my factual posts and the solutions. With cite and direct information implications of politicians creating mental illness on purpose. Thanks for the censorship as always. Half truths as usual.
Not diagnosing fungal pathogens which cause mental health issues is crimes against humanity.
Not citing research u will just take my post down again.
Global news still refused to comment the “catch and release “
Liberal voters are equally guilty
It’s to commemorate a Filipino hero named after a fish – lapulapu. This is said and all our thoughts to the Filipino community in Vancouver, Canada. 🙏🏽
Global new trying to support criminal and justify the tragedy
It’s a great election campaign strategy- vote well Canadians with your head and not emotions. Praying for all the people of canada
How could you roam this street after this tragedy? Broken souls will be around this area…
Condolences to the victims of the Vancouver attack.
Back in the Philippines though, questions are being raised. Why are there no physical barriers on both ends of the street, which would have deterred such an attack? And then there's the suspect – why did a guy with a known history of interactions with police and mental health professionals still allowed to drive a vehicle?
He is well known to police … this is why we need a new government no more catch and release does not work
He is well known to police … this is why we need a new government no more catch and release does not work please say their last interaction with the suspect was the day before he did this we need change
When you vote just remember the liberial goverment will realese this guy with time served in probly 10 years if he gets a full sentence it's only 25 years instead of 25 years per death! The liberals will have him out by the end of there 4 year term due to mental health issues but no worrys nothing will be done and he will end up doing it again that's the goverment we have in power!
so disgusting you people trying to influence votes and make this political. This has nothing to do with the criminal justice system and everything to do with mental health. By the way, that’s a provincial thing so if you wanna point fingers clearly it should be to the province or the city and the policing. Shameful to politicize for your own ends. pathetic and sad to take this away from the victims and their families to suit your own political ends. Disgusting actually.
😢
To think that the extensive damage done to that vehicle was caused by it hitting people is horrific. It looks like it was done by hitting something very solid at high speed, not by human beings. 😢
Something is wrong in the issuance of driver's license considering a list of mental health's history by the SUV driver.
mental instable and stil he was given a drivers license thats asking for it if you ask me
What could have prevented this tragedy?? How about we take mental health care far more seriously across the country? Supports are stretched beyond capacity.
Love to our Filipino 🌺brothers and sisters.
Drivers name KAI-JI ADAM LO, Chinese canadian
Where were his parents, siblings? Why didn’t they leave the car keys around for him to find, knowing he was a danger to himself/others? Sorry, irresponsible!
Should any big festival have some type of road block at two side of street of event? This such a tragic moments, My heart goes to family who lost their families and all of people who traumatized by the tragedy 🙏 💔 😢 😔!
Mass murder based on race/culture; is this not an act of terrorism? If it was a serious mental health issue why was the culprit permitted to walk the streets, maintain a license to drive a vehicle. Canada is seriously messed up.
That tragedy usually occurred in America, but Canada no.
This is a huge failure for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. BC psychiatrists are bizarre for thinking that this guy is not a threat to society!
Having studied at UBC and lived 2 decades in BC, I am both horrified and deeply saddened by what has happened. My thoughts and condolences go out to all those affected by this heinous event.
Mental issues is not an excuse. The victims need justice!
It is a heartbreaking 💔 😢 I can not imagine … Im very sad and upset because the Liberals destroyed our healthy system. It is hard to find a family doctor… 😢
My condolences to the Philippino people. They are some of the kindest people around the world 🙏🏽
my heart goes out to the families that lost loved ones in vancouver, and i hope the injured people have a speedy recovery
