Global National: June 28, 2025 – A Week of Discontent for Canada
As tensions mount between Canada and the United States, this week’s headlines spotlight a significant escalation in the trade dispute over Canada’s proposed digital services tax. On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced the cessation of all trade discussions with Canada, with an ominous warning of forthcoming tariffs. The crux of the disagreement lies in Ottawa’s plan to impose a tax on major U.S. tech giants, including Google and Meta—a move that has sparked outrage across the border. Mackenzie Gray provides an in-depth report on the implications of this rift and what it means for the future of bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, in Alberta, the provincial government is surveying residents on immigration policies as part of its "Alberta Next Panel." The survey asks Albertans to weigh in on a variety of questions, including the controversial topic of whether the province should have the authority to withhold social services from newcomers. Heather Yourex-West explores how this initiative reflects the broader debate on immigration and intergovernmental relations, as the province seeks to redefine its relationship with the federal government.
Turning to British Columbia, a political storm is brewing over a ship-building contract awarded by BC Ferries. With the federal government pledging up to $1 billion for the modernization of an aging fleet, concerns have arisen regarding the decision to partner with a Chinese-owned shipyard. Neetu Garcha examines the implications of this contract and the criticisms it has generated, highlighting the political ramifications that could emerge from this contentious decision.
As Canada’s summer unfolds, the nation finds itself at a crossroads, navigating complex international and domestic challenges. The events of this week underscore the intricate web of relationships that shape policy and public sentiment across the country.

Digital tax is stupid. None of the people who agree leave the house enough to live without Netflix, YouTube or any of the other tech companies
I've always felt like paying monthly for these services should have some tax deduction or return attached.
Great job… not even half a year into carney and he does a massive F up to please Quebec
All the cards but you quit the game. We can read your poker face TACO.
We can just avoid the tax by pirating the services.
As a small business I paid taxes. i dont see why these huge companies can do business here and not pay taxes here. Oh ya its because their CEOs are Trumps friends. Pay your taxes.
You do business you pay taxes. Why is this such a foreign idea for American companies. They get so many tax breaks, but if you ask them to pay taxes on what 1- 5% of it they whine.
oKAY ! but isnt it the same tax they pay in every European country ? Why so much whining over something so simple ???
These corporation will pay taxes or Canadians will cancel their services!
Isreal attacking a refugee camp is not surprising.
What do you call Tim Hortins employees ?
………. Timmigrants!!
The, Canada is Stupid Bill.
good, they probably pay more taxes in Canada than the US now. all these companies should be taxed to oblivion. they've made TRILLIONS of dollars off of consumers and have not paid their fair share
Nobody cares about your netflix subscription fee. The brunt of the tax is for B2B fees charged by google/amazon/facebook/twitter/netflix and friends for advertisements and commissions. As a consumer, all you're going to get is less targeted advertisement…
Ankles Up!
Is there anything more Canadian, than taxes?
Seems almost sacred to the elbows up crowd.
Trudeau’s tax legacy lives on….. tax tax tax…. all the Liberals do…how about managing your annual budget prudently? Oh that’s right, Carney’s Liberals don’t have budget.
The pragmatic approach would be to recognize that the US Administration that violates a previous deal….Can NOT be trusted to make or stick to any new deal….
Any negotiations should simply be to run down the clock on Trump. The internal US effects of trade war policies will not be popular.
God bless Canada.
US will struggle more than us
So many bots on this feed

I was born in Canada…and it's looking like I'll die an American. FML I hate the @Libs.
Liberals make another poor decision that will be passed on to Canadian consumers making life even more unaffordable.
Trade talks fell apart because trump is doing his tech oligarchs bidding?
Meh.
Ross Geller voice to Rachel Green about the Break – Fine By Me!
Would rather support Canadian tech companies anyway!
If you entered the u.s illegally why would you be suprised to get deported? When did it become ok to break the law? If canada let ppl vote on immigration issues i guarantee things would change. But politicians do what they want not what we want. Voter apathy? No way.
Time to turn off the light switch on the US Northern Side.
If companies raise prices 3%, no one complains; but if the government adds a 3% tax, people rage, strange.
Good luck collecting that tax! Watch it being scrapped!
Nice, another reason to stop watching TV
