Mark Cuban on Why Music Is “the Worst Industry Ever” (and How Artists Can Still Win) | On The Record
In the latest episode of On The Record, billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban shares his candid views on the music industry, declaring it “the worst industry ever.” Cuban’s criticisms stem from the pervasive challenges artists face, including low payouts and exploitative contracts. He highlights how traditional music labels often prioritize profits over creators, leaving many talented musicians struggling to gain visibility and revenue.
However, Cuban also offers a beacon of hope for aspiring artists. Emphasizing the transformative power of technology, he encourages musicians to harness digital platforms for self-promotion and distribution. By taking control of their work and engaging directly with fans, artists can bypass traditional gatekeepers. Cuban stresses the importance of authenticity and building a loyal community, suggesting that success in today’s music landscape comes from creativity, strategic marketing, and leveraging social media.
Ultimately, Cuban’s insights serve as both a critique and a roadmap for artists navigating the treacherous waters of the music industry. While acknowledging the industry’s flaws, he empowers musicians to innovate and find their own path toward success in an era ripe with opportunities. This dialogue is essential viewing for anyone looking to thrive in the modern music landscape.

old people are so annoying and easily impressed by A.I., everything he said he loved it because it does things “in 3 minutes”, they’re totally out of touch with humanity and artistry, they have no clue
AI music is deader than this comment section. People will always care that a song is AI bc they can never see the artist live and there's no life story behind the music. AI as anything but a tool for artists is just investorspeak. Stop trying to predict the future and look at what the world is telling you….
Damn how much money does this guy need
The difference TO THE ARTIST is that MAKING the art is the art. To the recipient/patron/investor/listener — basically everyone else — listening to the art is the art. Once the artist is finished making the song HE'S DONE with it. That's why so many "legends" don't like playing the hits. The ARTIST is on to the next piece of art. I.e. the next creation. A song can only be art ONCE to the artist — that is when it is made. PERFORMING the song to the artist is stifling of the art. To the artist you are repeating yourself.
🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
AI Music is dead. Make music because you love it. Period.
"Breaking into the music industry" is like hitting a bank that's already been robbed.
Music industry finna be cooked in the 2030s
SOOOO GOOOD!
Supreme Court has ruled AI music cannot be copyrighted meaning it won't generate money
What does he know. Get us someone that’s actually in the industry.
Every point she is making he proves wrong
This was the most soulless conversation about music ive ever heard. Ai and capitalism is ruining music
Did he say og bot? Aren't bots illegal?❤
Great show Billboard. Shark Tank is very influential too. Looking 4 an investor 4 my music company, one who can stomach loosing money A amidst these golden years of vinyl record revival
In an economy where the middle class doesn't have expendable income, why would anyone pay to see an artist live who was too lazy to write their own songs?
Great interview! He's really on point. I agree with everything he says.
This is a cool & different perspective really dig this show!
Consider the episode this lady did with Charlie Puth. That thumbnail is cluttered as heck! There’s a lot of text on the thumbnail and Charlie Puth’s image is small, et cetera. Just suggestions.
Hey 👋 maybe you should try a new thumbnail style? A lot of these thumbnails are quite cluttered and maybe your episodes would get more views if you had better/clearer thumbnails. Idk tho. Maybe look at Daniel Wall or ‘and the writer is’ thumbnails. I don’t think the girl should be in the thumbnail. It would be less cluttered if you just had the guest. But idk. 🤷♂️
How does this have 231 views
I have made more than 30 100% original albums with Ai for $96.00 was that a good investment if I only have 3 listeners on Spotify after only releasing one song?
