Exploring Mongolia’s Bad Fuel Problem: A Ride Through the Unexpected
Welcome to Mongolia, a vast and untamed land that lures travelers with its breathtaking landscapes and rich nomadic culture. However, as any seasoned adventurer will tell you, navigating the open roads comes with its own set of challenges. In the latest episode of my journey, I delve into a rather peculiar issue that many who venture here encounter—the peculiar smell of petrol and the unforeseen complications that follow.
The fuel in Mongolia isn’t just a means to an end; it’s part of the experience—yet it’s far from what you’d find in more developed regions. Within moments of filling up, I noticed an odd aroma wafting from my tank, hinting at the adventure that lay ahead. Join me as I take a closer look at how this “bad fuel” problem can affect even the most seasoned rider, leading to unexpected engine troubles and a re-evaluation of my trusty motorcycle’s performance.
In this episode, we’ll not only explore the challenges posed by fuel quality but also discover how they contribute to the richness of the Mongolian travel experience. Buckle up for a thrilling ride filled with valuable insights and the resilience that comes with exploring the open road in one of the world’s last great frontiers.

Happy Easter everyone
Does anyone know what month the video was filmed? It would be nice to know.
Rubbish fuel, you will need to change the filter, you're lucky to have any fuel at all the petrol stations in UK mostly closed, because of the war in Iran
It’s probably water in the fuel. ⛽️
I don't understand the number of thumbs down. These videos are a wonderful window into a life I'm not suited to live, but dream about. Thank you!
I love it = ) 💙
Hi 👋 Shahzad From s | Views Days.|| Tired s 🇲🇷 Video s | Eoiys 🇵🇰
Fuel is from Russia, has a higher sulpher content. Drone video's are really nice.
10:30 – OST from the Spirit cartoon movie by Bryam Adams and Hans Zimmer! Great music.
I remember watching a VHS tape in the 80's, some adventurers washing their fuel in some country, they got cans full of fuel, mixed in water and alcohol and a flocking agent put it on ther car for shaking around all day and mix well, then when they stopped for the night they filled up big empty water containers and let it settle over night.
In the morning they could tap off the top 75% from the water containers and left the mucky stuff on the bottom that was water and sediment/grime
Don't take the extra filter out Naraly, its way better to have as a first line of defence 🙂👍🏽
The smell is probably because the fuel is old
Russian petrol I expect.
Oh my god, I didnt know the petroleum is bad in Mongolia
..and then there is Ludwig and Michael who cant even find the right road going towards Mongolia
Hi Noraly, Check your tank cap breather isn't blocked, otherwise you will get a vacuum in the tank….hence the fuel starvation…..if you suspect this, loosen the cap slightly to allow air to pass the cap seal and see if the situation is improved. If it is , it should be simple enough to clear the breather in the cap.
