What better way is there to celebrate a decade of rocking than a new album packed with bangers? K-pop supergroup NCT 127 gifted the NCTzen nation the best present of all on Monday (Aug. 24) when they dropped their seventh full-length album, the nine-track BLINGY.
The collection opens with the hard-hitting Benjmn-produced hip-hop title track, accompanied by a heist movie-like new video (see below) for the track in which the members — JOHNNY, TAEYONG, YUTA, DOYOUNG, JAEHYUN, JUNGWOO and HAECHAN — set out in search of all things Blingy, eyeing glittery watches on the subway and a golden pig sculpture.
The mix of banging drums, glitchy synths and the full-on chant chorus serve as a rousing call to arms, featuring the refrain, “Under bursting sparks, feelin’ real blingy/ Bringin’ that bounce, make the whole club shimmy/ Ooh, blingy. eyes on my city/ I’mma big dog, fire it up higher, heat it/ Ooh, blingy heart starts beating/ Rising flame, yeah, you might get dizzy/ Blingy, blingy, blingy, blingy, blingy, blingy, blingy, blingy/ I’mma blingy, blingy, blingy.”
According to a release announcing the project from the NCT sub-unit, the album “reflects on NCT 127’s journey over the past decade while staying firmly rooted in the sound and identity that have defined the group,” wrapped around the collection’s central slogan, “CALL 127,” which highlights the coming together of the group and their fans as “One Team.”
Also included are the high-energy, gospel-dusted rager “Legacy,” the bouncy, funk-rap-meets-rock explosions “Piñata” and “Step Up” and “IKR,” a futuristic banger spiked with video game-like sound effects. The smooth-gliding “Getaway” is a pure pop pleasure ride on sweet harmonies and jazzy guitar, while “Day After Day” comes on like a gentle ballad before busting into hectic, double-time drums on the choruses.
The LP winds down with two tracks featuring all seven members — including DOYOUNG AND JUNGWOO, who are currently on mandatory military leave — the yearning “127 Million Miles” and the reflective “I mean, It’s about time,” which looks back on the past decade while promising to keep moving forward as a cohesive unit.
NCT 127 are gearing up to hit movie theaters across the world with the upcoming global live cinema event NCT 127 TOUR ‘NEO CITY : SEOUL — THE REDLINE’ in CINEMAS, a screening that will bring the group’s fifth world tour kickoff show to movie theaters around the world on Sept. 20. The concert will be broadcast live from Seoul’s Olympic Park KSPO Dome, chronicling the finale of the group’s three-night kickoff performance on their fifth world tour.
The shows will be the group’s first full concerts after a nearly two-year hiatus from touring, and will include a reunion with charter members TAEYONG and JAEHYUN, who sat out the previous tour due to their compulsory South Korean military service stints. Tickets for the screenings will go on sale on Friday (Aug. 27) at 10 a.m. ET; for local screening times, participating theaters and full ticket details click here.
