Ahmed al-Sharaa, the newly-appointed leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the most powerful group in control of Syria, has made a bold statement to the BBC. In an interview with Jeremy Bowen in Damascus, Sharaa proclaimed that Syria is exhausted by war and poses no threat to its neighbors or the West. He called for the lifting of sanctions on Syria and argued that HTS should no longer be classified as a terrorist organization.
Sharaa, previously known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, led the lightning offensive that brought down Bashar al-Assad’s regime just two weeks ago. Despite HTS’s roots as a splinter group of al-Qaeda, Sharaa insisted that they are not terrorists and do not target civilians. He emphasized that his group should be judged separately from the crimes of the Assad regime, denying any desire to establish a Taliban-like government in Syria.
Throughout the interview, Sharaa appeared relaxed and attempted to reassure skeptics who fear a return to extremist rule in Syria. He highlighted his belief in women’s education and the differences between Syrian and Afghan society. Despite his reassurances, many Syrians remain skeptical and fear the emergence of a hardline Islamist government.
As the country navigates this new chapter under HTS leadership, the world watches closely to see if Sharaa’s promises will hold true and whether Syria can truly emerge from the shadow of war.

He is ex isis ex Al Quadra and changed is name to jolani for Holman heights … so israel and women minorities in Syria should be worried. Islamists re told to lie to non Muslims by Koran so don’t trust his word. Get rid of all Syrian weapons he can use against them.
The BBC is full of BS. I no longer find them trustworthy. They tell us their hopes and dreams rather than the truth. This will not age well in a year or two.
Alcohol is prohibited according to the Islamic faith. I think it is, to put it lightly, not the right question to ask. Muslims would want it to be illegal, and according to the Islamic faith this is because of health, maintaining good marriages, and maintaining a good and deepened connection to God. Additionally, plenty of Christians think the same way in the west as well. It is religiously logical, and atheists can simply understand that too. The journalist seemed to ask the question as if alcohol should be permissible and if he were to respond with ''no'' he would caught him red-handed. I do not believe that is true. A media organisation, and the reporter working for it, should decide to make better decisions in regards to interviewing another person. The BBC as well as the reporter should have higher standards than this. They are intelligent enough.
How about Satanyahu gets his ass out of Syria?😮
He is calling himself a victim? Liar indeed.
Could we no longer get adverts asking to asist Syria with food and water but the donations actually go to the teachings of the quran? this seems immoral if it isnt illegal…
I mean for god sake’s , couldn’t they find anyone worse than that bag of filth to send, just look at his attitude, and the things he asked are very stereotypical and racial.
Free Syria …
Its badr hari 🥊 whit s beard
Of course they label him as a Islamist instead of human, BBC do better.
Message to the west: Leave them alone and they will prosper. End of story
Syrians must focus on economic stability and peoples welfare
Why is drinking alcohol so important to a Western journalist when he’s asking about a Middle Eastern country that’s over 80% Muslim? Why are Western norms even for things like drugs the assumed norms for other countries? The cultural imperialism is nauseating.
Vëlla i nderuar! Nëse ju nuk aplikoni Sheriat do na habisni sinqerisht! Ska kuptim i gjith ai gjak Muxhahidash i derdhur në këto 13 vite😢😢😢
Its unbelievable that reporters still try to blanket all arab nations with the same colour. Their history and cultures are so diverese. Given how tiny europe is, how hard is it to ask a proper question which includes nuance. People living in Europe love shouting about how different they are to each other. I can't imagine how the countries where the earliest civilisations began, feel when they hear this coming from the mouth of a representative of an island nation
God Bless You Syrian CITIZENS this is sad! Why can't our world of people get along?
Syria will now become an Islamic shithole.
Who new Al-Qaeda was going to be running a country
نحنا سوريا بلد وشعب مسلم رسالتي الى الغرب المنافق عليكم احترام ديننا وعاداتنا او لا نريد رويتكم في بلدنا نحنا لسنا اوربا نحنا سوريين عرب ومسلمين
Yeah nothing to see here guys. Please send us some aid. Mostly peaceful protests here but more aid. Nothing to fear here. In fact book your next holiday here. 🤷♂️
WTF BBC. The whole world didn't care about millions of moslims for 15 years, but when we died to get our freedom as Syrian moslims they ask us about Alcohol.
They already have invaded Britain
Give a 5 yearold a mic and let him ask questions, he will do a better job than this reporter
Hope for a free Democrat Syria, not a Islamic Regime, like in Iran where women have no rights and have to wear the Hijab by force, because they are Islamists, we will see in the few months to come!
What a stupid journalist..the smirk on his face when asking the questions, not an intelligent journalist..he could have asked questions that would at least show a worry for Syrians who suffered under the Asad’s rule.
