Olivia Rodrigo and Kelly Clarkson grew up in different decades, but they both have one musical icon that they love in common.
In a new clip from the “Vampire” singer’s interview on The Kelly Clarkson show, the duo discuss their mutual “hero,” Alanis Morissette. “She’s the reason why I’m a songwriter. I was like, ‘Oh man, I can funnel this,’” Clarkson told Rodrigo, who noted that she was introduced to the rocker by her mom.
“I do have the coolest mom ever,” the 20-year-old Grammy winner said. “I remember hearing ‘You Oughta Know’ on the radio when I was, like, 12 years old and being like, ‘Oh my God, what is this? She can say that line about the theater? What? That’s insane.’ I fell in love with her.”
Flash forward to May 2022, and Rodrigo got to perform the 1995 hit with her idol onstage at her Sour Tour stop at L.A.’s Greek Theater. “Can you believe that?” Rodrigo gushed to Clarkson.
The “Get Him Back” singer went on to induct Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame that same year. “My life was completely changed [after hearing Jagged Little Pill],” she said during the ceremony. “Alanis’ songwriting was unlike anything I’d ever heard before and I haven’t heard anything quite like it since. And that voice — fierce and tender and sometimes funny and playful. I became hooked for life.”
