Phffft: A Sophisticated Romantic Comedy of Rediscovery
“Phffft,” directed by Mark Robson, encapsulates the complexities of love, divorce, and the often humorous quest for happiness. Released in 1954, this charming romantic comedy stars the brilliant Judy Holliday as Nina and the effervescent Jack Lemmon as Robert, a couple whose impulsive decision to end their eight-year marriage sets off a chain reaction of awkward encounters and self-reflection.
The film opens with Nina and Robert believing that life apart will bring them fulfillment. However, as they dive into the dating world, they quickly discover the pitfalls of modern romance—each date more disastrous than the last. Joined by the suave Jack Carson as a new romantic interest, the trio navigates a series of comedic situations that highlight the absurdities of love and intimacy.
While the narrative unfolds with light-hearted wit, it subtly delves into deeper themes of self-discovery. Robert and Nina, amidst their chaotic forays into single life, gradually realize that their struggle may stem from personal insecurities rather than their compatibility as partners.
“Phffft” is not just about the cringe-worthy moments of dating; it’s a reflection on the importance of understanding oneself. Through beautifully crafted dialogue and an excellent performance by the cast, the film captures the essence of romance and the often harsh lessons it teaches.
With its sophisticated humor and heartfelt storytelling, “Phffft” remains a delightful illustration of the journey of love—reminding audiences that sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

I loved this film. Definitely a fan of Jack Lemmon films. Always quality. Its funny most films at some point in the movie will say the title of the film. Other than in the newspaper, not once did anyone say "Phffft" lol. Cute film.
I LOVE Jack Lemmon but I DON’T LOVE the mustache!! 🙄
Jack Lemmon and Jack Carson. I haven't even watched it yet and I'm physically exhausted.
It was a great shock when the lovely and talented Judy Holliday passed away (at the way too young age of 41) in 1965. Besides this film ("Phffft"), she and Jack Lemmon (in his first major film appearance) made another wonderful comedy called "It Should Happen to You." Jack Lemmon called her "the brightest person he had ever had the pleasure of working with."
Mental cruelty is what you have done to me while acting so innocent 😇 but I choose Life for all that exist around me and I fed and supplied housing for everything I can … they don’t make lawyers between you and I
Poor tiger…

Put piphany on they divorce
Pretty nice movie.
Holiday and Lemmon have good chemistry. Novak, on the other hand lacks a talent for comedy and isn't a great actress to begin with. Looks stunning, though.
Axelrod's story is charming, but not nearly as good as The Seven Year Itch.
That makes me wonder if Wilder would have made a funnier and ultimately better movie. Because Robson just wasn't good at comedy.

Wow wow. Lovely love story, Judy and Jack were so good in this movie. I love Judy, she was natural and so charming. Kim was good too. But I prefer Judy.

Kim Novak is effervescent! Good to see her again.
Love Jack and Judy. Judy had an exceptionally high I.Q. and was also a genius at her craft.
Similar movie she filmed with Aldo Ray…"The Marrying Kind". I would have preferred Jack Lemmon in the role after seeing this."
Sweet film. So 50's. All the men are wolves and all the women are either Doris Day or Rita Hayworth. Judy Holliday was an original.
That black halter dress that Judy is wearing when Jack comes over is just a classic “chef’s kiss” perfection. I would wear that today, even with the rhinestone waist decoration.
The dance scene is pure gold entertainment! That is such a cute and funny routine. The dancing is pretty good too.
This is great. Used to have this on VHS and haven't seen it in years. I've looked for it on dvd to buy, no luck. Thanks!
Funny, sweet movie, Jack Lemon so young
The best scene is Kim Novak.
The dance scene was hilarious. Very cute movie.
Thank You So Much
Judy Holiday,a sweet actress. ❤️
Dance scene is 😂HYSTERICAL ❤
I loved Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday with William Holden❤
Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon were such a wonderful pairing, their chemistry and comedic timing were absolutely incredible, it's very sad to see they didn't make more movies together because they would have been a legendary on-screen couple.
An absolute H O O T of a fabulously funny film….!!! 👌👏
Charming. I always loved comedy actress, like Judy Holliday. Jack Lemmon so young and the spectacular Kim Novak.
