A former Takata engineer unveils the hidden dangers behind the largest automotive recall in history. Airbags, designed for protection, instead pose a serious risk due to a critical defect.
Despite warnings and alarming incidents, companies and regulators have downplayed the issue. Through undercover investigations and rigorous testing, a whistleblower exposes the truth behind this industry crisis. His mission: to inform the public and prevent further accidents.
But will the industry take responsibility before more vehicles become part of the problem? This eye-opening documentary reveals the untold story of corporate oversight and the fight for automotive safety.

It's clear threw testing that Takata did to make sure there product would work had to have see on many tests units how parts of the ED was penetrating the canvas inflating bag and would kill people from being hit with shrapnel from it's device so they should be …..
Replaced hundreds if these airbags under recall for japanese brand. They paid slave wages to replace them and most if them required complete dash removals. Now in 2025 the final inflator is supposed to be the fix. These corporate clowns are morally bankrupt.
I've done so many of these recalls, I've lost count.
I thought the fault was with the Japanese, I didn't know it was the US branch that fucked up.
I Remember that recall my parents golf had them air bags I saw the paperwork when we bought the car in 2020 the air bags wer replaced all the way back in 2009 those airbags where in UK cars as well
Whoever denied you should be charged with some kind of crime they all need to go to prison
I never knew the reason for recall until now. I've been getting recall notices for a long time but I'm so far from a GMC dealer it's just not possible for me to take my truck there & leave it with no way to get home so I've never done it. Now I know it's a life threatening problem I'll find a way.
Easy. Invite all takata executives to a conference where their seat has been fitted with their inflators. "Gentlemen, we want to demonstrate your excellent product"
Boom, instant chopped maki rolls
Namaste!
50:35 is a young and much thinner Michael Moore.
Challenger Disaster Roger Boisjoly was the guy saying, "Don't launch." Now comes John Keller saying Takata airbags are deadly and no one is listening. Thanks, John.
Recalls are free services provided by dealerships. Sure they will have to have your car for that time but it costs you nothing, so long as your VIN is listed under recall. Its also not unreasonable to ask for physical proof of the original bag being removed and replaced with a known-good, non-Takata bag. As far as a vehicle with a non-recalled Takata would be worth checking the airbag yourself for any known manufacturer part number and do some searching for non-Takata brand bags as replacements. Often parts are built for other affiliated manufacturers or depending on regions, different people entirely. A Nissan built in Japan may have Takata, but a Toyota built in America may have a different brand. Both will fit the same car, but different internals, for the better.
It's a shame that the only response to this from the manufacturer has been to kick the can down the road. There are people who have had their Takata airbags replaced with newer parts, which while possibly safe when they were installed will in future become just as dangerous as the ones that were replaced. It seems that the manufacturers are hoping that people will junk their vehicles before the problem comes back again.
Even worse – if you have Takata airbags and you are unhappy with the idea of an IED in front of your face you can't remove the airbag without technically rendering your vehicle unroadworthy.
I wonder if it would be possible to start a GoFundMe for this guy and his family.
They sacrificed a lot of their personal finances in the interest of exposing the dangers of those air bags and it would be nice if we could reimburse them for those tens of thousands of dollars
The airbags were in almost every brand of car but toyota took the brunt of it. The replacement units are identical with same flaws but are safe for so many years. when they are getting older the company will do another recall with same units again untill all the cars are scrapped. Thats what i was told here in ireland when i was a toyota tech. I personally have fitted replacements on cars that i had already seen done as there would be tells or stickers on them. No recorded cases of anything happening over here. Hotter climates were more dangerous i think they said
Keep in mind GM experimented with air bags in the 70s but if I remember correctly they couldn’t get them reliable enough to roll out. Then the govt required them in 1990. Wonder which bureaucrats got paid to issue the requirement….
Sounds to me like the heart of the problem is cultural. The USA culture was to trust that regulations and engineers and businesses would "do the right thing" as far as saftey is concerned. But the manufacturing culture focused on "do the right thing" as far as shareholder profits are concerned. Buyer beware needs to return. The public should not be forced to buy a product, that way the companies will be forced to make these products relevant. Remove the governments' roll in manufacturing and watch these companies improve themselves.
SADLY , this CRIMINAL "wrong doing", is all about CORPORATE GREED !!!! And even MORE SAD that just about ANY Gov official CAN be "bought", for a price….. No matter if Human lives are at stake !!!!!!!
why are we as consumers removing these from our owned vehicles?
Yet another Government cover up
Wow, this is eye-opening!
And today we’re removing regulatory commissions from Washington !
Now I’m mad ! 💙
One person dies due to a fault it is not an issue, 300+ people die due to a fault with a aircraft, then it becomes an issue….only for a short time…..Damm sad that the cost of life is so little. As a retired automotive mechanic, if I made a mistake and a person dies, I got to Jail, if a cooperation makes a mistake, no one is held accountable.
Thank you for your endless work.
This is so scary and disturbing how many other companies are hiding defects in their products and allowing them to be in production. Very eye opening …
Japanese are very corrupt pieces of shit – Toyota accelerator fiasco, Yazaki price fixing, Takata airbag scandal…. Many many more. People have a false sense of security with Japanese brand names. It’s a total lie
I trust my dealership as much as I trust Takata.
My job as an engineer is to accept or reject jobs that do not pass our QC stage.
Our system is broken, it need fixing.
Random public review on the goverments dime is my first thought.
Can't be hard to make airbags that only deflate and don't give off metal fragments.
I'm pretty sure i am capable of creating a safe one.
Where are the decent people in this world? I dare say, people in positions to protect innocent lives, people being paid extremely well to protect and serve and people who have the power to protect innocent people just do not have the balls to stand up and do the right thing! This is absolutely terrifying, and it should be, if executives and regulators think that a serious, yet unpopular recall would cause fear and mistrust, they need to think again, no one should trust you to do the right thing! God bless this engineer and all of the innocent victims of the automotive industry’s negligence!
Thank you John for giving a voice to the people who had their voices robbed from them by greed and corruption, takarta and boeing both was preventable if government agencies cared they would have not brushed it off constantly.
The engineer is a huge hero, most people would have given up early on when facing all the obstructions in his way to get action.
His missus is a special lady too.
We never had our kids in the front seat until they were big enough so that the airbags wouldn't kill or maim them. It's just common sense.
I knew Carlos from Spring Tx that sadly passed in 2019 when the airbag shrapnel killed him in a low speed minor accident – absolutely 10000% preventable tragedy. I have a recall on my airbag but have been told repeatedly that the humidity and age doesn’t put it at a priority replacement. I live on the gulf coast with very high humidity year round (anyone that lives here will tell you that) and my truck is now 16 yrs old but I don’t want to replace the airbag 💣 with another 💣. Thank you very much to the brave whistleblowers and the docu team for bringing this critical issue to light because one life needlessly lost is too many! Now is the time to hammer all of your local and federal Legislators about this!
you are a true American Hero! Thank you for your service to mankind!
I was thinking there must be an indian in this story and boom 💥💥
My people never disappoint 😅
Need to ask who owns all these companies…
God bless you and your offsprings for being true.
Takata Exploding air bag scandals… They just learned to pad their QA Panel with former US Dept of Transportation officers as consultants. "Wickedness / Darkness in High Places" – "Denying the truth". Same spirit that led to SIN – denying that God is Kind, Merciful and Just.
No outstanding recalls in Europe…
Oettinger? Immer gerne wieder.
why has this been unlisted. I know you see my comment
