A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Sunday for southeastern Virginia, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News and Williamsburg, as tornado-warned storms move northeast through North Carolina.
The storms are tracking toward the North Carolina–Virginia line. Moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias is feeding the severe weather threat.
Tornado Watch 681: Virginia and Eastern North Carolina
The Storm Prediction Center issued Tornado Watch 681 for 1:55 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT.
Virginia counties: Brunswick, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Isle of Wight, James City, Mecklenburg, Prince George, Southampton, Surry, Sussex and York.
Virginia cities: Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Emporia, Franklin, Hampton, Hopewell, Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.
North Carolina counties: Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Martin, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington.
Waters: the Chesapeake Bay (including the Bay Bridge-Tunnel), James and York rivers, Pamlico, Albemarle, Currituck, Croatan and Roanoke sounds, and Atlantic coastal waters out 20 nautical miles.
A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible. Stay alert.
NWS Wakefield had earlier upgraded most of its area to a Slight Risk for severe weather, with the highest confidence south and east of Richmond.
Tornado Warnings in North Carolina
At 1:56 p.m. EDT, NWS Raleigh had two active Tornado Warnings, both with radar-indicated rotation.
Southern Warren and northeastern Franklin counties, until 2:30 p.m.: a storm near Louisburg, moving northeast at 40 mph. It will cross rural areas, including Afton, Ingleside, Centerville and Arcola.
