Sixth night of protests in Turkey as Erdogan hits out at unrest

The streets of Turkey continue to be filled with protests for a sixth consecutive night, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses opposition parties of fueling violence. The unrest initially erupted in Istanbul after the detention of the city’s Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is Erdogan’s main political rival, on corruption charges.

Imamoglu has strongly denied the allegations against him, labeling them as politically motivated. The Republican People’s Party (CHP), Turkey’s main opposition party, recently announced Imamoglu as its presidential candidate and has stated that the demonstrations will come to an end on Tuesday, although they did not specify what the next steps would entail.

The Turkish government has reported that 1,133 people have been arrested since the protests first began. Erdogan has held opposition parties responsible for inciting the ongoing movement of unrest, while the opposition remains steadfast in their resistance against the government.

The situation in Turkey remains tense as the protests show no signs of abating. Stay tuned to BBC News for more updates on this developing story.
