The CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division, Brian Thompson, was tragically gunned down Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown in what authorities believe was a targeted attack.
Thompson, 50, had arrived at the hotel early for a conference when a masked assailant ambushed him along Sixth Avenue, firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene on a bicycle, according to police sources cited by the New York Post.
Despite the best efforts of first responders, Thompson succumbed to his injuries after being struck in the chest. The harrowing incident was captured in video footage that showed the frantic attempts to save his life with CPR.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, which has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a respected business leader. UnitedHealthcare, Thompson’s employer, has yet to release a statement regarding the tragic event.
