UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Apologises for Historical Forced Adoptions
In a moment described as a significant reflection on the past, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has offered a formal apology on behalf of the British government for its role in historical forced adoptions. The apology, delivered in the House of Commons, addresses a painful chapter in British history where an estimated 185,000 babies were taken from their mothers between the 1950s and 1970s, a period marked by societal stigma around unmarried motherhood.
Starmer characterized the events as “a stain on our history,” acknowledging the deep emotional scars left on “tens of thousands of mothers, children and families” affected by these policies. Women were often pressured into relinquishing their children, facing significant societal and familial pressures that deemed their circumstances unacceptable.
This poignant statement arrives after decades of advocacy and campaigning by mothers, adoptees, and their families, who have sought recognition and accountability for the systemic injustices they faced. Parliamentary reports have highlighted the need for recognition of these past wrongs, paving the way for this long-awaited apology.
Starmer’s acknowledgment is seen not just as a formal admission of guilt, but also as a step towards healing and understanding the lasting impacts of these historic practices. The acknowledgment of this dark past serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and reform in contemporary adoption practices, as well as ongoing efforts to support those affected.
As the UK government seeks to reconcile with its history, the response from victims and advocates remains mixed; while the apology is welcomed by many, there are calls for further action to support affected families and improve adoption policies to prevent similar injustices in the future.
The Prime Minister’s words have sparked discussions on societal attitudes towards women and motherhood, illuminating the ongoing impact of stigma and discrimination. As the nation confronts these historical injustices, there is a collective hope for a future where the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

And today the NHS still commits unspeakable violations of your fundamental rights in the name of government healthcare “safeguarding”.
I do a comment the BBC will not show.
It was all a total disgrace like some other practices that went on at the time. It was not just babys mothers to.
Unmarried pregnant women were frequently sent to mother-and-baby homes, and in some cases, committed to mental institutions. Often, this was not due to genuine mental illness, but rather because pregnancy out of wedlock was viewed as a sign of "emotional instability" or moral failure.
Sad but true
What is an apology is going to do now…😢
What!
Then hold yourself and all the others accountable. If there was any decency to go around. 😊
WHAT?????? HORRIBLE
England should do more for Migrants ‼️
England took babies from African slaves
Why is the house so conspicuously empty?
When I first read the title I thought he was apologising for all the forced rules he applied on the British public, one could dream!
These actions were abhorrent and I feel for these poor women, but we've got to stop this apologizing for actions of others we can't change. We need to focus on here and now, be it grooming, knife crimes immigration and people being able to afford to live
He can apologise to grooming gang victims too.
Disgusting liars. Labour and the BBC.
Wow! This is brilliant! Now 99% of all abortions are accidentally pregnant after conception now! We have come such a long way where mass killing of babies in the womb is just like swallowing a tablet!
ALL UK governments have never cared about children.
This is another example of what is 'Politically Correct' eventually being shown to be 'Not Actually Correct'. And, just the latest example of many. I hasten to add. As the amount of human suffering caused by government and it politically correct garbage is unmeasurable.
Thank you Stamer, with tears.
⚠️If the current British Prime Minister can apologise for the injustices done to mothers decades ago, why can’t the same prime minister apologise for the injustices done to the people who were under their colonialism? Truly a double standard. I’ve often heard the feeble excuses that today’s generation should not feel guilt for the crimes of their ancestors, yet Kier Starmer is offering an apology for something that is no fault if his. The kohi noor remains a reminder of the past age and what has yet to be reconciled.
Starmer is a total fraud
No the shame is yours you make the laws
My mother never got over it
🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱😴😴😴😴😴…
At least they were encouraged to deliver the babies. Now getting an abortion is almost like popping out for a packet of paracetamol.
who was in power for fourteen years tories why aren't tories apologise then we're in bower
Starmer, your apologies sound so fake and disingenuous
He may have made a lot of wrong choices, at least this acknowledgement could be a balm to an ever gaping wound for mothers who were forced to give up their children.
All the idjits talking crap to Starmer when he wasn't even responsible for what the culture was back in the day. I swear some British people have regressed!
Oi mate! He's only been Prime Minister since 2024!
On the dey when the BBC uncover that multiple migrants smugglers convicted by French courts are now in the UK under false identities illegally owning & working in their own vape/corner shops & awaiting the outcome of their asylum claims…
why should only starmer apologise not tories it was there mess
So… 50yrs before a UK govt apologises for Gaza & for criminalising protesters.
At least there’s a timeline
I am glad I never voted for this person 😂
Shaking there hands for taking the heating off them
Forced adoption is still happening, they took my baby from me as a teenager and I'm 30 now, time taken away from me as a mother for no reason! Starmer can shove his apology up ya arse and the system and corrupted councils and government!
Ok
Time to face punishment then. Yes?
It is difficult to feel enough disgust at what was done by the sysstem but also difficult to feel enough disgust and contempt at the actions of governments which perhaps aided the Gaza genocide, a genocide recognised by Canadian Rabbi Dovid Feldman, but not by certain givernments and media channels?
based policy from a more tradcon time
It is not Starmer’s place to apologise for this. It was done by the state ell before his time. From Starmer this is a fake apology. He is just trying to collect airmiles that are not his. He disgusts me.
The four million pounds over three years that has been offered is an insult, compared to what is spent every week housing and feeding those who arrive in boats.
This Labour government are a joke .
You can’t be ashamed if you weren’t involved or there, ridiculous
Me/ as well
