Switzerland’s gold | DW Documentary
Four of the seven largest gold refineries in the world are located in Switzerland. However, the legal regulations are weak. What is the industry doing to ensure that no “dirty gold” ends up in Switzerland?
Switzerland is the international hub for gold. Between 50 and 70 percent of the gold mined globally is melted down and processed in these refineries. Once it has been melted down, no one can trace where the gold originally came from.
In 2023, the United Nations sent a letter to the Swiss government. The accusation: Their laws were too lax. As a result, Switzerland was becoming a gateway for gold sullied by human rights violations, child labor, mercury poisoning, environmental destruction or involved in the financing of illegal groups. Industry representatives and the Swiss government claim that great efforts are being made to make supply chains transparent.
The film examines how successful these efforts are. Can supply chains be fully traced and monitored? A trip to the largest gold producers in Africa shows the chasm between Switzerland’s claims and the reality on the ground.

Oh Africa. Why are state run companies failing inefficient??..
Europe is a machiavelic continent
You cant blame the company's, you have to blame the corrupt government that lets them get away with it
Korrekt, DW !👍
God help Africa 😮
Business is business
Our brave Ghanaian journalists have been sounding the alarm for years, but it took a foreign filmmaker to make the world finally pay attention. Ghana’s gold is costing us poisoned rivers, wrecked forests, and shattered communities — all so Switzerland can sparkle. And the tragedy? Our own politicians and chiefs are deeply complicit, selling out the land for their selfish gain. This documentary is more than truth — it’s accountability. Massive respect to the creator for amplifying the voices we’ve been screaming with.
21:38 "companies that are run by the state are not run efficiently"
neoliberal capitalist propaganda 101
Of course now the company then can be bought by say USA companies and the profits go there, as it is listed at
Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Blocking purchases from a country just creates an opportunity for someone to traffic and launder it. There is no guarantee it is “clean gold”.
1g gold=$100, significant money in Ghana
And this stuff is in our electronics too. Regulations is key! Or else certain people feel it's okay to misuse other people in order to gain profit. No regulation = treat people as you like to achive your dreams.
Also transparency in the supply chain is key and worth fighting for.
Great doc!!!
soo sad. Africa will never learn ! great documentary
Am i the only one thinking.the narrator is AI?
And…………………………………nothing will change. Corruption as usual. I mean business.
Polluting the air, water and skin so that banks can fill their lockers to store gold for the future😵💫
The money wasted on making this video could have feed a few Ghanaian families for a year!
This documentary will change nothing!
Great documentary, but nothing new to learn. The power of gold has always corrupted humans.
In der nächsten Folge kommt die Korruptheit von Brüssel…. 🤔
Why gold when you can use national digital currency and real currency denominations?
And there's china… whistling..

Who is the Token brown guy? Not a Swiss, dresses like one talk like one, not one
Great ❤❤
The guys which you see have big amounts of shares from gold buyers in Europe who can’t compete
The place I would start is getting some charities on board and purchase and distribute those gold separating machines to all these illegal mines to start eliminating Mercury. At $2,000 each, that’s a better investment. As the one person said, given the choice to mine or farm, most of the people will choose mining. So make the conditions better for the environment in these illegal mines because laws won’t stop them, just encourage new ways to avoid the truth!
1:20 oh yeah for sure his boss will neeeever identify him and have a man with a machete pay him a visit!
soon that continent will collapse. greed, overpopulation, poverty, no education, 3 1/2 times the size of America
We in Africa are doomed, no work, no education, our land is poisoned, rampant war to control our nature resources. What is left for us is disease, poverty and death.
Watch Al Jazeera Investigations' Gold Mafia. You're welcome.
Clean rich Europe always at cost of somewhere else in the world.
Thanks. However, I found the documentary lacking scientific, geological information. It would be important to explain why the gold mining in Ghana has ruined crops, water etc, according to what you mention. Are there not mining techniques that don't have these consequences? Etc
Before this documentary I knew nothing of the gold industry. Now I know something… Thank you for this informative production. 👍
Money Money Money, Money
"don't buy from unethical sources" without also addressing what happens to the people who depend on that work. Sustainable solutions must pair ethical oversight with support for livelihoods—things like fair trade systems, investment in community development, access to education and training, and transitional support if harmful practices must be phased out.
Who cares. Switzerland is better. We are neutral. We keep everyone happy, thus no issues with anyone.
Switzerland being on the spot,..🤔
During World War II, the Germans stored gold stolen from all over Europe in Swiss banks.
41:18 amen 🙌🏾
39:50 Rhäzünser
39:41 environmental beauty only surpassed by the Swiss Alps
36:17 the number of portraits here, juxtapose that with the denialism going on as soon as he opens his mouth is record-breaking heartbreak.
