The cartels that control Mexico's mega market | DW Documentary
The “Central de Abasto” in Mexico City is one of the largest markets in the world. A place where trade and criminality merge, on a site covering 327 hectares.
The market attracts around 500,000 visitors a day. They come to buy a whole range of everyday items, in addition to fruits and vegetables. The market also employs around 100,000 people – from the people who work loading and unloading produce to wholesalers.
The Abasto’s problems mirror those of Mexican society at large: While some have made a considerable fortune from the vegetable trade, others live as day labourers, on the fringes of the market in extreme poverty, under plastic tarpaulins. Even those who’ve secured a spot on the sales floor as ‘hawkers’ lead a precarious existence. Extortion, corruption and violence are the order of the day there, too — despite a massive police presence, and pledges of reform made by the market administration.
Cartels like the ‘Jalisco Nueva Generación’ have long since found ways to get rich from the trade in things like avocados and limes — staple foods for the Mexican population.
In Michoacán, the main avocado-growing region, the cartels extort ever higher taxes from the farmers – and they’re not afraid to use violence to get what they want. While citizen militias are standing up to the criminal gangs, the increasing price pressure is having a growing impact on the ‘Central de Abasto’ and its customers.

When I was a student living in Mexico City back in 1988, I used to take the train to this market once or twice a week to gather souvenirs for my sisters. It’s too bad crime is such that I doubt I’d travel back to Mexico City. At the time, the big crime was family kidnappings and robberies. In fact, one of my professors were tied up and robbed during dinner while the gang member took her husband to the bank to drain their account.
Trump wanted to send in troops, but Sheinbaum denied him. She's working with the cartels.
I love on this show how they claim that the government is scared of the narcos. Yep they may be a little scared but that's where they make all their bread and butter at.
DESTRO07,N.DALLAS TX. YEAH,YEAH WE TAPP,N INN..
We all know that the cartels were behind the disbanding and disarming of Mr. Mora's citizen militia by the government to make it easier for the cartel hitmen to kill them. Sad.
Criiminls have lot of followers

Most organized crime investigations in Germany involve drug offenses, racketeering and property crimes. But human smuggling is becoming a lucrative business model.
Even independent media here in Germany point to the alarming growth of drug trafficking in the German countryside.
Pray for my home state of michoacan 🙏 the other one of my relatives witnessed a murder in the city of Zamora 🙏
The problem is always the culture and the mentality.
Why don't you mention that the country you're talking about (Mexico) is today the 12th largest economy in the world, having replaced australia and south korea. There are 196 countries on earth. Why don't you google the country you're talking about is in the top 10 exporters in the world (net, including airspace) and also that it has broken record cutting poverty by 25% according to the wto? Why do you not make a documentary about the cause of the issue you care the most about? The kartel? And find out it's the "neighbor"? Btw the country you're talking about is the 6th most visited on earth. The comment section is alarming. This is why we have the world we have because with the internet, people could find out, but they refuse. Btw your countries now look like war zones, while the one you're talking about was one of the 10 happiest countries on earth this year. Google it if you can, or i guess don't research anything, so you can continue to believe what makes you feel better. The reason no one will stop talking about this country is because it's one of the few countries in the world that has never allowed a yanKee militarY base. To make matters worse this country (Mexico) is taking off, so it's resented. Mexico is a country of many faces and strokes, unlike yours. AND it doesn't bend over at request. Their president is also doing exceptional work against the yan k ee funded and yan k ee armed kartels, who work for their biggest client, yan k ee land, where all the dRugg consumers are.
Mexico is so secure we get 42.5 milion visitors 2023 and we have income$ 30.5 billion dallars only 265 reports misdemeanor please!!😂😂😂 if you want fiction wach NEtFLIx
so if i were to live there. ihave nothing to worry about huh. i have no money and no job
Hard truths. I would like to visit the market one day.
I feel sorry for Mexicans for living in such dangerous country. Half of Mexicans live on 3 Euros per day? That's insane. Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
I'm so proud and glad my dad came to U.S 39yrs ago even after being deported 2 times, he never gave up on the American dream. Now my dad owns a home and his two boys work in the oil field and building data centers across the U.S.
The Mexican government should be ashamed!
By the way, you get caught with a gun in MEXICO. It’s like an automatic 25 years.
crime rate,is much higher in the USA because its widespread, if the cartel gained intellectual leverage over the infrastructure, that is their weakest point, because intelectual leverage can be circumvented, not just by avoiding, gang lifestyle but become smarter them, once you master these skills, you can navigate a boat in alligator,or shark infested waters ,and decide on a reasonability factor the boundaries are set by you or others .But in recent decades, far too many has over estimated their abilities trying to rig the US system and trying to lay low and stay invisible and submit themselves to slave like conditions ,when thousands of individuals are trying out the same idea, and they fail,is when people supposed to refresh and gain new perspective on life.Well thats didnt happen and when millions are stuck and are unable to get out of the cage or hole they burried them self under ,is when they realize, there's nowhere to go because they wasted precious time and resources to better them selves. The United States has always been cut throath, and always will be, only the fittest and hardworking will suvive, because unfortunately ,thats the kind of world we live in today.
Hipolito mora was ambushed and killed with his bodyguard and burned😡 the president of Mex past and present are on the payroll of you know who😡
Cartel’s main tool are weapons and the USA supply thousands to them everyday. Courtesy of the CIA to control drug supply and with that control the price.
It always gives me shivers when I see interviews of targeted people trying to fight for change and later in the documentary it reveals that they were eventually killed/assassinated 26:56 I hope he rests in peace with his son and comrades
It’s not called prickly pear they sell nopales which is just the cactus itself. Prickly pears are the fruit of the cactus. Nopales is a staple item and used in many dishes as a topping or side dish.
DW the Best in touch of One World beyond the Time, yesterday today tomorrow.
What most people dont understand and so dont share in their reports is that there's very little gov oversight or regulations for industries in Mexico. For these reasons the cartels take over security, logistics, etc, and many see it as just a tax. The person described here as being a hero pretty much created their own cartel that offers the same services. Obviously it has gotten down to a deadly situation, but if you take account of how the US and other nations are run, it's almost the same thing, it can get deadly if you disobey the gov, but very few do that here in the US. In mexico it's a free for all, it's a true free old school, old world market, which the US is happy to maintain that way.
If you have enough money, you can go to mexico, set up your own militia, and run your own cartel, making billions, working with the gov, if need be, which will be needed, especially US intel.
Someone like Elon could afford it, but he spent his cash on the current US admin lol, which I think was a smarter solution for his issues, he shoulda just used another clown as a puppet instead of being the clown himself, too easy to be cut off that way.
Its easy to speak about others sins from a foolish eurocentric self given pedestal. Why dont you cover more pressing matters for you? Who blew the northstream?
What I learned from this episode from DW, nothing, Mexico is still the same like all other countries trying to survive
Thank the CIA for Cartels. They set them up and still benefit financially.
Please help, stop consuming avocados from Mexico, the water shortage is outrageous, and is due to the avocados production.
