Millions of women are victims of fake sexual content on the internet, created with AI. Deepfakes can look deceptively real, but the images, audio, or video recordings are manipulated.
When Kate Isaacs clicks on the video, she is thoroughly confused: She and a stranger are having sex. Her first thoughts are: “Who’s that man? Who’s recording this?” And then she realizes that the video is on the internet. After the initial shock, the reality hits her: This is a deepfake, and she is a victim of image-based sexual violence.
Worldwide, millions of women are knowingly or unknowingly victims of deepfake porn – pornographic content created by using artificial intelligence. The technology has advanced so rapidly that these days, anybody with a smartphone and a few pictures of their target can create and distribute deepfake porn, using freely accessible apps.
The real-world harm caused by virtual abuse is profound: Damaged reputations, career setbacks, threats of violence, depression, suicide. No one is safe, and anyone can be targeted. Yet it is almost impossible to defend oneself.

And a video of her having sex with a partner was uploaded to Pornhub and it was incredibly difficult to get it down so I wrote to the ministry of Justice over here and it turned out there was no law that prevented a company from profiting from non-consensual
Image-based sexual abuse and I decided I had to change that when I got started I I didn’t have any experience in activism I didn’t know where I was getting myself in into and it was a lot harder than I anticipated I was very naive um but yes dealing with
PornHub was an experience to say the least I think when you you see the type of stuff I had seen you can’t go back from that you the amount of content I saw which was so abusive and the victims I spoke to who shared their stories and
It was just it created absolute havoc in their life and they lost so much of you know if it wasn’t their jobs it was their dignity so I threw a logo together put together a campaign put it on Twitter image based sexual abuse in this country is going up
And up and up the pornography industry has been profiting from this type of image-based sexual abuse for a long time now these are UK registered companies this is government’s responsibility to hold these porn companies to account we need to fix this issue it has grown a lot since my very
Angry I just went on Twitter days um to what it is now and I’m I’m really proud of it and I’m so proud of the women who have made it what it is today as well which is a fully fledged nearly not for-profit organization with a number of
Women working on the campaign almost full-time and we do things like sex education programs in schools police programs to help officers deal with victims of image-based sexual abuse raising awareness and helping out within government and Consulting on different legislations hello you look lovely lovely too how are

Much to do so standard right so should we start with doing a little bit of an update what’s going on at the moment so we’re currently working on influencing a new piece of legislation at the moment the campaign that we’re working on has been really effective because we have had
Some survivors come forward it just really underlines how out of touch not just the legislation is but the way that policy makers and lawmakers are thinking about this subject it’s not practical and what are you hoping will happen there are enforcement measures they’re just not strong enough it looks so great
On paper but it’s not thought it’s thought by people are thinking with legal minds and thinking with policy Minds not people that actually are living those experiences we’re at a stage now where we have to start tackling prevention and we’re not doing that on platforms and
That was the literally the Crux of the campaign when I started it it was about damage prevention rather than damage control it was preventing this content from being allowed to be uploaded to these websites because as soon as they do they can be downloaded and then re-uploaded over and over again and and
You’re just playing whacka all I do it so I’m a little bit nervous we’re facing an epidemic of deep fake pornography very little is being done to challenge uh the existence of websites that are dedicated to the sharing of deep fake pornography and that’s simply because governments and
Politicians have not yet taken the action to try and stop those websites we could do it if we wanted to but governments and politicians are choosing not to I think the real reason for this is because the vast overwhelming majority of victims are women and abuse and harms
Of women are just not taken sufficiently seriously women are still marginalized often vulnerable often discriminated against in society and what happens is that new ways are found to exploit those vulnerabilities and to uh perpetrate forms of violence and abuse at the moment the internet companies and porn platforms are living
Their best life earning millions of money with very little regulation whatsoever it’s up to governments across the world to take action to regulate those companies in the same way that we regulate cars we regulate trains we regulate the ovens that we cook on every night we need to regulate the internet
And we need to get governments to take that action we’re a modern world we’re ever changing um and we want to see more young women in politics it’s really important that we have a diverse representation of people in our society um in our government and when you’re a younger woman I think a
Lot of people Maybe Might believe that you don’t have the correct experience or understanding but I think Young Voices should be included yeah hey how are we all good good well look it is great to be here today and see you all again and I know that you have been
So passionate about including young people and their voices in politics so I thought today would be a good opportunity to sort of talk about issues that matter to us I think in the governments that women are so under represented and I think that leads to a lot of legislation being passed that um
Killers to men and is written for men by men we need to have it equal we’ve come a long way but I think they’re still so far to go but that’s why the youth group is so good like you advocate for you know such a diverse range Even in our
Youth group we should be doing we really want to see um diverse representation that reflects our everchanging sort of society after the last election um we really want to do all we can to tackle misogyny um in society and online 100% I think it’s a sort of thing of like when
You’re a young woman going into politics everybody is like oh but are you ready for everything that’s about to come if we talk about misogyny and skills it’s the way that people will start talking about it and hopefully it will encourage more women to speak out yeah like if we
Um like education is so important as well I feel like and um you can educate through social media and you can spread our message I mean given of what’s happened to me I think that the fact that we haven’t seen a change in law is extremely disappointing if I had the
Power to change the law I would do it right away I think that our government has a role and a job here and I think that they need to step in and I think that women impacted by these issues need to be at the table talking about how to fix them
Okay great okay everyone thank you so much appreciated your time it was great thank You so it was 2020 and we had just had a massive Victory and porn had deleted 80% of their content overnight 10 million videos gone unfortunately like with anything there were a very small amount of people particularly on Twitter who weren’t very happy that their porn had been
Deleted and so I became public animum number one they decided to Target me and teach me a lesson in their words they found my home address and my work address and they posted it on Twitter and said that they were going to follow me home rape me film it and upload it to
Pornhub which was scary and then they decided to take one of the interviews I had done on the UK news news channels and integrate that into a deep fake porn and create a narrative that the reason why I wanted to get rid of the porn on pornub was
Because I created a porn film myself and I was just trying to get it off the internet and so they just tried to switch up that narrative and it was a way to just silence Me I saw that video on Twitter there was so many things that ran through your head in that moment one of them being oh my God like who’s that man who’s recording this and then oh my God it’s on the internet oh my God how the hell do I get this
Off once I’d calm down and those questions had stop circling you realize okay this can’t be real cuz I don’t have the answer to any of those questions and so when I realized it was a deep fake the questions then shifted there’s slight relief but not for very long
Because then you’ve got the question of okay but it looks really real are people going to think that is actually me because that’s going to do the same damage and I knew that the police weren’t going to do anything I had enough experience with this kind of stuff at that point
That I knew that they wouldn’t do anything I knew there was nothing I could say or do I could keep pushing The Narrative of that’s not me that’s not me but it didn’t really matter if it was or it wasn’t because people were going to believe what they wanted to
Believe I am furious it’s exhausting to go through this day in day out and hear so many VI survivors when we have such limited capacity to support them and we have to say to them the system is failing you and we will do our best to
Support you but there’s a limit to what we can do because the route to justice is just it’s not really there that terrifies me that that can be weaponized to try and shut somebody up it’s a big reason why you know I am so tired and I
I’m ready to step down because actually we shouldn’t have to have been doing this in the first place no that you shouldn’t have to worry about being deep faked because you’re a campaigner there should be situations that we do not have to fight for like that’s not our job it’s
Never been our job he was Furious to be honest with you I actually get a lot more scared every time I do an interview like this um because they could see you and start again because I’m putting myself back into it and back into the public eye and that creates more
Um that’s scarier to me them walking home now um sorry I didn’t realize I was going to cry but you do it yeah tell me tell me why it’s important to do it it’s important too I spent I’ve spent the last four years asking women to share their stories because as people we
Listen to stories and stories make change for me not to do that when it like what a hypocritical move deep fate pornography is being used to harass women out of politics to harass women off the internet so all of us are in impoverished in our public and Democratic
Lives I’m so angry I don’t think I don’t think there are words for the rage I Feel women and girls are targeted to keep them silent to keep them submissive something that men have done for Generations we have haven’t seen any Law changes to protect other women who could be the victim of this this horrible thing that isn’t considered a crime so you’re allowed to ruin someone’s life
