The Global North taken to court – Who pays for the climate catastrophe?| DW Documentary
From their lecture halls to the International Court of Justice. Law students from the South Pacific have joined island nations to demand greater climate accountability from industrialized countries.
The case before the world’s highest court was initiated by 27 law students at the University of the South Pacific, all from islands that could become uninhabitable as sea levels rise and storms grow more frequent.
As might be expected, the Global North has pushed back against their demands for greater responsibility for the consequences of climate change. The United States and Germany argue that international climate law doesn’t clearly make countries responsible for past emissions. The young law students are going up against opponents who know the international stage inside and out. What gives them the courage and determination to keep going?
In 2023 they achieved an early victory: their campaign for climate justice won the support of the U.N. General Assembly. That lead to a resolution calling for the international community to take action on climate change.
We follow Vishal from Fiji and Jule from Germany. Both are fighting for justice and compensation for climate-related damage in developing countries. Their journey takes them into the world of international diplomacy, where they confront powerful opponents — among them industrialized nations and oil companies who don’t want to have to pay out billions in reparations. All the while, lobbyists and diplomats from major nations try to sway the voices of small island states.
The film captures the optimism of these young people who, full of determination and hope, demand accountability on behalf of the generations to come. Exclusive interviews with judges and historical footage highlight the importance of the case. In July 2025, it all culminates in an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice.

I only trust the news service called APTN when it comes to the business world now after our Liberal Canadian governments more than once had uncsuccessfully taken
U.S. companies with a monopoly to court concerning their dangerous to people in workplaces and dangerous to environment products being marketed in Canada too. After that federal government Liberals party members elected didn't bother to ever go after any U.K. head office international company with a monopoly too concerning their high pressure sales schemes sellling the same kind of stuff too. Well thank goodness queen Elizabeth II after working as a mechanic in second world war wasn't going to be that easy anymore after her work experience for high pressure salesmen to dupe too.
The Global North is having a debt crisis and will not foot the bill anytime soon. Good luck with that.
So what happens if "compensated"? You become rich and start emitting more as well? Everyone is guilty in one way or another, let's not point fingers.
oh my god i'm german and i'm gonna signal my virtues please take all my tax euros i'm so SIGNALING MY VIRTUEEEEES
Your little islands are sinking, I'm afraid… 😥
Fantastic! Yes, it is necessary. Voice of the entire population not just a 2% crowd of elite globalist, warmongering industrialists
Looking at the world at the moment that if you dont have the power enforce it yourself no court is gonna help you
Please my friends understand that it's not our activities that affect the climate, yes, fossils fuels cause greenhouse effect but it does not affect the climate, effect is less than 3% What causes the changes in the climate we are witnessing is as the sun ages, when it is fusing Hydrogen into Helium in its core, it grows and so does the temperatures over millions of years and our planet adapts to this via the changes in climate we see. This is inevitable
Start by convincing brazil china and india to respect emission laws
A global farce!
But no one wants to blame China huh
I admire them for trying , but I believe it is for naught. 😢
Who do you think happens? The same people who are the richest and pollute the most, rule and control the current system. Money gives power, industry gives power, so pollution gives power. The industrial revolution gave rise to the industrial elite. The ordinary people never had a chance. They can barely survive, let alone have free time, or own opinions without fear or poverty or persecution.
This is just smokes and mirrors, it is a bunch of priviledged people flying to a place and pretending they have a chance to change things. True change should happen from bottom to up.
But our current rulers are psychopaths who see people as slaves to work, to kill and to r*** with impunity. They have their private islands and bunkers.
What does that mean 😊
World Court, what a JOKE
😂😂😂😂
Gib me logic is one of the reasons some people/societies/countries are a wreck of failure
