Dancers at the New York City Ballet go through about 7000 pairs of pointe shoes each year. That’s because traditional pointe shoes only last for a few hours of dancing before they need to be replaced. With each pair costing between $80 and $100, the cost adds up quickly for the renowned ballet company, totaling nearly $1 million each year.
The high cost of pointe shoes is due to the intricate craftsmanship required to create them. Each shoe is handmade and customized to fit the individual dancer’s foot, ensuring that they provide the necessary support and flexibility for performances. Additionally, the materials used in pointe shoes, such as satin, leather, and glue, are all of high quality and add to the overall cost.
To help offset these expenses, the New York City Ballet relies on fundraising efforts and sponsorships from luxury brands. In return for their support, these sponsors often receive recognition in the form of branding on the ballet company’s programs and promotional materials. Additionally, the company’s annual gala events provide an opportunity for donors to contribute to the cost of pointe shoes and other expenses.
Despite the high cost, pointe shoes are an essential tool for ballet dancers, allowing them to perform intricate footwork and movements with grace and precision. The New York City Ballet recognizes the importance of providing its dancers with the best possible equipment to ensure their performances are of the highest quality. By investing in quality pointe shoes, the ballet company ensures that its dancers can continue to mesmerize audiences with their talent and skill.

This should have been on your series about wasteful products.
yeah it did look like she was destroying it😆
Is so beautiful and so sad 😂
Leading shoe manufacturers cant make more durable shoes?
It's ABSURD that they're still doing all that in 2024.
Absurd.
For such a physically demanding sport, the gear sure seems extremely out-of-date.
From a man : Classical Ballet is beautiful to look at and listen to … but what women do to their feet ( keyword : NAILS ) … OUCH ! 😬🥴😵 … and the principal dancers ( women AND men ) doing all the jumps … guaranteeing back & joint pain later in life … oh my !
anyway it has survived so long, it probably will survive at least another 60 years.
Thanks for the segment 👍, Classical Ballet is one of the last things to enjoy in this modern world. 😊
( P.S. don't ever show this to the "barefoot shoe" community which has emerged over the last 15 years 😂 especially not to the ones advocating for a large toe box 😂 )
Greetings from Germany, check out Iana Salenko & her husband-dance partner Marian Walter ( Berlin State Ballet ), or the great Polina Semionova. 🤙👌
For most at this level, is ballet a hobby that they do after they get off their job?
Always incredibly fascinating to learn about! Thanks for the segment.
And nobody ever thought about to change and improve these garbage ballet shoes.
