Title: The Kuril Islands: A Tense Visit by Putin and Its Implications for Japan-Russia Relations
In a stunning political maneuver, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently visited the disputed Kuril Islands, escalating tensions between Russia and Japan. This territory, which has long been embroiled in a contentious dispute following World War II, remains at the heart of one of Asia’s longest-running diplomatic stand-offs. This provocative visit has unleashed a flurry of diplomatic responses and reignited discussions about the strategic importance of these islands.
At the core of the Kuril Islands dispute are the southernmost islands of the chain, known as the Northern Territories in Japan. This territorial disagreement has persisted for decades, primarily due to the conflicting historical narratives surrounding the end of World War II. Following the conflict, the Soviet Union claimed these islands, a move that Japan has vehemently contested. Despite their strategic location, rich fisheries, and potential mineral resources, no formal peace treaty has ever been signed to resolve the issue, leaving a lasting shadow over bilateral relations.
In the video, experts Jeffrey Hall from Kanda University of International Studies and Natasha Kuhrt from King’s College London provide deep insights into the motivations behind Putin’s visit. During the interview, they explore the stakes involved, pointing to the islands’ strategic significance to both nations. Kuhrt notes that the ongoing dispute reflects broader geopolitical tensions, particularly as both countries navigate their roles on the global stage amid shifting alliances and rivalries.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi didn’t hold back in her condemnation of the visit, labeling it “absolutely unacceptable.” Her comments underscore Japan’s strong stance on its claims and highlight the deep-rooted emotions surrounding the territory. This sentiment resonates with many Japanese citizens who view the Kurils as an integral part of their national identity.
Further complicating the situation is the fact that neither Japan nor Russia signed a formal peace treaty after World War II, which Hall identifies as an unusual occurrence in modern diplomatic history. This lack of resolution has allowed the dispute to fester, impacting various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade and security cooperation.
Another significant aspect touched upon in the video is Japan’s “military doctrine,” rooted in its Pacifist Constitution. As regional security dynamics evolve, Japan faces pressure to rethink its defense strategies, particularly in light of growing assertiveness from Russia and China. The Kuril Islands not only have historical significance but also represent crucial geopolitical leverage that both nations seek to maintain.
As for why Putin chose this moment to visit, experts suggest it could be a strategic move to assert Russia’s presence in the region while simultaneously testing Japan’s resolve. The timing may also reflect Russia’s need to reinforce its claims amid international isolation due to heightened tensions in Eastern Europe.
Ultimately, the question remains: is Putin’s visit merely symbolic, or could it lead to practical shifts in the political landscape of this long-disputed region? The reactions from both Tokyo and Moscow indicate that the implications of this visit will resonate far beyond the islands themselves, potentially altering the course of Japan-Russia relations for years to come.

I gave you a cake and you loved it that's how u treat Japan
Japan as stockist and manufacturer of American Patriot Missiles… RuZzia Poootin is threatening and trying to apply pressure/blackmail on Japan NOT to support nor Supply Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
Classic KGB/ FSB doctrine and tactics.
I don't expect Japan were ever expecting RuZzia returning the Islands in the near or distant future… so I think they will continue with what ever plans Japan Government had that Poootin was desperately trying in vain to stop.
There is more chance of Japan getting the Islands back with the RuZzain loss in Ukraine and the fall of Poootins regime…so it's more beneficial to Japan to support Ukraine….I don't see the Japanese People cowering to RuZzia and Dictator Poootin.
I think she means pacifist lol
Nah in this instance Russia is in the right
Japan can beat sand they occupy Okinawa and Chinese islands too
Still haven't deposed Putin? Man i feel bad for the Russian people.
Everyone hates Putin, and is justified, dude is a paranoid psychopath.
How is the Russian president visiting Russian territory unacceptable? I'm not pro-russian, but the kuril islands have been ruled by Russia for over 80 years, there's nothing for Japan left there
But they have been Russian from 1945.
What is the problem?.
I don't think the young Germans of today knows their history by commenting trash about island you nothing about.😮
Putin needs to make ''enemies'' to bring more unity between his people. He wants mobilization. It is no brainer.
Russia is the only combatant of WWII to increase its territory. It took over a great deal of original Polish land; it took over land which before the war was German, now called Kaliningrad Oblast; it took over Japanese Islands (which Japan may have taken from Russia in the old days); and now it wants to claim additional territory in order to cloud over its failures in Ukraine.
It is clearly a problem of Japan to face the outcome of the second world war. Japan lacks the ability to handle the humilation of losing the war across the political spectrum and all levels of society. Only the geopraphical advantage limited Japan's loss of territory after the war to a few irrelevant islands. Surprisingly, media, and even relatively competent and respected scholars ponder about this issue heavily biased towards Japan. Obviously the politically correct opinion having the insane villain Putin involved.
Imagine what would be the reaction, supposed Germany would ask for the return of Kaliningrad from Russia or even East Prussia from Poland?
8 September 1951
A peace treaty was concluded in San Francisco between Japan and the Allies
Japan has renounced its rights to the Kuril Islands, including Iturup.
What is she talking about ❓️
The Fire is most certainly Rising.
Japan attacked Russia without provocation during world war 2. Russia acquired the 4 islands after defeating japan is justified.
I think the Japanese government is running the country into the ground, that Trump is undercutting Japanese exports of Cars and Chips and that Japan is looking for the easy way out and that is claiming this land so they can sell it to repay their massive government debt.
Japan hasn't paid a single cent towards the 80 years of development of this island and Putin has seen first hand that this island is occupied by Russian people, not Japanese people and that like DPR LPR and Crimea inwhich Ukraine demands, there is no viable plan to deal with the people living on that land who are supportive of having the Russian government being their public servants.
What this highlights to me is the massive Japanese corruption and influence of criminal groups who think the law doesn't apply to them and they can just take other peoples land. That its highly likely America has infiltrated the likes of the Yakuza to pressure the Japanese government to act in their own worst interests and attack Russia.
Isn’t this the same Japan that has a shrine dedicated to war criminals that have committed atrocities? Plenty of Japanese prime ministers have visited and you don’t see the Japanese people complaining.
The lady in pink dress is propagandist
Japan killed more then 20 million Chines people. Stop make Japan like its nice nation. They only get humbled when US nuke them.
It is Russian territory .
Europe should give back all the island they took then
Jjapan should be gratefull that Russia did not take whole Japan after Japan tried to conquer whole Asia. Now, Japan can run their mouth and that's all thay can do. Otherwise, they will be nuked again.
Russia is so greedy
🌻🇺🇦🇯🇵🌸
Historically, the Russians were ahead of the Japanese not only in the Kuril Islands, but even in Hokkaido, so "historically" is not the best argument for the Japanese. And Japan historically remembered international law only when the other side was too strong for the samurai. When Japan had good relations with Russia they practically managed the islands together, but when Japan declared itself an enemy of Russia, it was immediately expelled from the Kuriles. What else did they expect? Russia captured the Kuril Islands in battle, and will likely not give them back because of the talk.
Why don't Putin get all the Russians around all it's stolen territories back to Russia as his country is big and scarcely populated. Russia and China just goes around and claim land that don't belong to them
Time for Germany to reclaim Konigsberg.
This situation seems similar to the Falkland Islands dispute between Argentina and the UK. As much as I have no love for Russia, Iturup is 100% made up of Russian and Ukrainian people, they use the Ruble and none of them want to be part of Japan. From Japan's side, I get it: Russia is a bully and do you really want a bully literally 3km (1.86 miles) away from you? Maybe Japan can give Russia something in exchange for the island? It's not like there's oil or gold on it, so you'd think this wouldn't be that hard to settle.
Putin need a psychiatrist
But why there is no Japanese there? How Russia became the owner of the island 😂😂😂
Same situation like the Diaoyu island (Senkaku), this island has been annexed by Japan. The first person founded the island wasn't even Japanese.😅
Japan and Germany sometimes forget that they lost WWII and that are consequences for their defeat enshrined in the international law framework that made the post WWII world
For example Germany keeps saying they are going to rearm for a potential war with Russia.
Japan is doing to same in East Asia against China.
What these countries forget is that there is a clause in the UN charter that says that if any of the aggressive nations who launched and lost WWII start rearming with the purpose of launching another war of aggression the victorious nations who defeated them in WWII have the legal right to launch a pre-emptive war against them to make sure they no longer present any more danger to themselves and to any other country.
Also both Germany and Japan signed surrender treaties with the victorious nations who defeated them in WWII.
These treaties say that the victorious nations who fought in WWII have the right to keep occupation forces in the mainland territories of the defeated nations to make sure these aggressive nations no longer present any danger to any other country.
That is the treaty that allowed Russia /Soviet Union used to keep Soviet troops in East Germany.
But the Soviets never placed troops in Mainland Japan.
However the treaty Japan signed in 1945 gives both Russia and China the legal right to keep troops in mainland Japan just as much as the United States.
The problem is that Russia and China never demanded to exercise their right however that right is still that should they choose which they have according to surrender treaties Japan and Germany signed in 1945.
shouldnt be controversial – not sure why Japan leader doesnt restart treaty talks if – securing the islands in everyones interest – but the north island from Japan – join development opportunity – negative reaction – when it could have been perceived as an open door to start talks
Those territories belong to the Ainu, who were brutalised by both the Japanese and Soviet empires 😬 it's really odd that you start with the deportation of the Japanese but did not mention the actual native population…
Japan lost the Southern Kuril Islands because during World War Two it was an ally of Germany and threatened the Soviet Union, while also controlling Manchuria. After the Kwantung Army was defeated by Soviet forces, these islands passed to the control of the USSR.
Since the USSR no longer exist…and the demise of the Russian Federation is on the near horizon, it looks like the winner and take-all of this contest goes to Japan.
Imagining have disputes with all the neighbors 😂
Don't underestimate China involvement in that afire
