Corticeira Amorim, the world’s largest producer and distributor of cork, has been a dominant force in the Portuguese cork industry for 150 years. However, their success was threatened 20 years ago when the cork wine stopper industry faced a crisis due to fungi. To combat this challenge, Amorim combined traditional techniques with new technologies to save their business and explore new uses for cork, one of the world’s most versatile materials.
The process of harvesting cork trees and processing cork bark is crucial to the production of cork stoppers. Amorim has mastered the art of making cork stoppers, producing an impressive 22 million wine stoppers a day. Cork is a favored stopper material due to its excellent properties, but the industry faced collapse before Amorim’s intervention.
Through innovative technology and product development, Amorim has not only saved the cork industry but also diversified its products, from cork flooring to even sending cork to space. The Portuguese cork industry has been revitalized by Amorim’s forward-thinking strategies, ensuring a sustainable future for the company and the industry as a whole. As the world’s largest cork company, Amorim continues to lead the way in cork production and innovation.

there's a big cork tree in the Beal Botanic gardens at Michigan State University… it's something else to give it a big hug. squishy.
Cork is an incredible thermal engineering material: super low mass, high thermal resistivity, and good char holding properties. You'd be amazed how much cork ends up in rockets and other aerospace vehicles.
Can you make a eco friendly cork plug for my girl.
Does the world use 22 million corks a week let alone a day???
10:15 – We had that same Hymmen at my last job… somebody was always breaking it. ✌
Its interesting that the sign of a mediocre wine is its screw top, when in fact, a screw top keeps wine better than cork.
Cork soakers
Its funny that the BI narrator talks about drought from climate change but the farmers dont mention anything. North american propaganda
La producción de corcho también es un proceso
Very interesting.
I think a petroleum based plastic cork breathes just as good and is cheaper.
I don’t know why but I somehow did not expect cork tree bark to be just straight up cork. I always assumed corks were chipped up and glued to shape or something. Very cool video!
I’d love to know if that study factored in organ donation. It’s not hyperbole to say that those deaths do lead to a not insignificant increase in number of brain deaths that then result in increased organ availability. My guess is that was not reflected in the study.
Dear BI, please censor the trees when they're naked!

Imagine having so much faith in another human being that you'd let them work above you, axe in hand, without no head protection.
This guy is literally skinning trees alive and then asking us to respect the trees smfh
Pretty amazing.
New respect unlocked!
What a very interesting documentary
Wtf is Richard Hammond harvesting cork
I always thought there were a bunch of guys soaking the corks to get them in the wine bottles, with the master cork soaker being the best cork soaker in the world
