In the US, oxtail was once considered a cheap and undesirable cut of beef. That’s because it’s mostly bone and fat, with only about 40% usable meat. But as it’s become more popular in recent years, its price has jumped to $14 a pound. Now, oxtail’s longtime fans are fighting to #MakeOxtailCheapAgain. Despite its high price tag, oxtail has gained popularity for its rich and flavorful taste, making it a sought-after ingredient in dishes around the world. The rising demand for oxtail has led to an increase in its price, as suppliers struggle to meet the growing appetite for this once overlooked cut of meat. As consumers continue to flock to oxtail for its unique taste and versatility in cooking, the price of this once cheap cut of beef may continue to rise.

We used to get this for free at the Commissary….they used to give it for free along with sweetbreads and pig skin!!!
This happens to almost everything. I used to buy tilapia for $3 a pound. Then literally the next time I went to the store it was $13. Chicken wings used to be really cheap to get people to come in to buy more drinks. I just saw chicken wings at a restaurant for $2 per wing.
Chicken Back tasty too!
Alwys expensive in asian.
Unlike western. They dont know shit.
😂😂😂😂in africa its free😂its given to dogs😂
We of the black community in Texas have been eaten oxtails for generations. Nothing new to us.
Switch to beef and neck bones 😋
They literally pricing us out of our food that no one wanted
Blacks scraps = white folks delicacy. Burnt ends used to be the left over scraps of beef now they're the first thing to run out at a BBQ restaurant. Not to mention the cost of Chicken wings and Chitterlings
Lobster was food of the poor in the 1700 and 1800’s. The cat is out of the bag on ox tail, it’s not going to be cheap again. Y’all. Need to keep quiet about cow foot.😂
$14 a pound is crazy.
Oxtail stew and oxtail soup are awesome
There isnothing special about this just like chicken wings, banana art..
Or less farming
I grew up eating beef liver, heart, tongue, and tail. It was what my mother could afford and she did great thinks with all of it. Granted it took a lot of Heinze to get a 10-year-old to eat liver but ohhh those onions!
Soo its basically gentrification for oxtail ehh?
It used to be cheap as hell. Basically, they were the leftovers parts that butchers couldn't sell along with neck bones. Immigrants who grew up eating it in their home countries would buy it locally and as immigrant communities grew, so did oxtail the prices.
Black people gotta stop inviting counterparts to the cookout
I always wondered what yall West Indians do w/ dthe rest of the OX.. yall just lop off the tail, thats it.. why I never hear abt a plate of OX ribs or a Ox burger, Ox Foot soup
The second the “secret” is out then prices go up. I remember certain liquor was cheap like patron. (Horrible tequila by the way). The second entertainers started rapping about it, the price went sky high.
This video making the price go even higher
We asians arent happy about the price inflations😂
Please don't tell them about the chicken foot soup now😂
And as a Jamaican woman you should know better than that you don't go tear up the dogs still off for no bone bone to suck on
See all these "health" products at nutrition stores have collagen in pill form. And you know who goes there? ⬜️ People. They eat the "luxury" cuts of meats the same they would do during slavery while we ate the scraps and learned how to make it taste good. We're told not to waste food, so we lick up the juices from the pot (pot liquor), which is now known to be where the nutrients actually go. We been eating oxtails for years, we like the buttery taste and come to find out it has collagen in it. (DUH)….. and our skin tends to stay healthier. White people i need you to really wake up and start embracing other cultures, not taking them and excluding people or changing it. But seriously immerse yourself in the culture.
Yea that’s right, oxtail, chicken wings, lobster, crab ,were all throw away cuts of meat. We can make anything taste good. Hhhmmm. I wonder when chitlings gonna come in style?
Ugg, as a former meat cutter, the first 2 minutes is driving me crazy! Why hack at an oxtail with a cleaver? Why cut thawed tails on a bandsaw? Jesus. I regular knife cuts through the joints like butter.
Gross.
My great grandmother used oxtail bc it was a great cheap cut for soup. It's disgusting how they have jacked up the price. I fully support any movement to make it cheap again.
I recently paid $30 USD for a small plate of oxtail at my local Jamaican restaurant , my mind was blown at the price 😮. As a Jamaican, I’ll be buying and making my own oxtails, once in a while when I’m craving it. Otherwise, no more buying out for me.
Decades ago, nobody wants ox tails, chicken feet, …. They were considered poorman's foods and could only be found in ethnic grocery stores.
I've been eaten ox tail since the 70s.
Spare ribs used to be cheap as well now they're expensive as shit.
The more attention they bring to it, the more they "try to make it cheap again," the greater the demand and thus the greater the price.
😂 During the unpleasantness of slavery and colonization, oxtails was the White man's trash. Now its a delicacy.
Jamaicans😅
Loved oxtail since I was a kid. And even more now as I have grown up… making oxtail soup or braised it in red wine are just too easy to make. Doesn’t take too much effort and tastes delicious
Growing up, my mom would add oxtail to “caldo de res”. I always loved it. Just last week, I was grocery shopping when my wife said we should make a caldo de res. She went to go grab a couple of oxtails and saw that they were individually packaged and were $14.99 each. I told her we aren’t paying that price for oxtails. The internet turned oxtails into a luxury food.
The best soup I ever made was from a pound of oxtail that was given to me. I tossed it in a crockpot with some potatoes and other random vegetables. Along with some spices that would go in a regular old chicken soup recipe. Eight hours later and I was in heaven. One of those happy little accidents that never happened again. I told my mom about this amazing soup I made and then she told me that when she was a kid, oxtails were just given away by butchers.
I'm the south and I grew up eating oxtails
WAIT!!! Ox tails aren’t from OXES???😮😮😮😮😮 deception is DIABOLICAL 😮😂❤
It's LesBBQ's fault 🤣😂 "in every way" " I'm out!!" 🤣
It’s the black tax.
There is an alternative but I’m not sharing. I don’t want price of that to double as well
