The trade in human skulls from the colonial era – A disturbing legacy | DW Documentary
“African human skull, early 20th century, 2,000 euros.” Adverts like this can be seen on social media. The trade is legal in Germany, even when the skulls date from the German colonial era.
This reportage reveals the questionable nature of this trade in skulls — especially when their origin becomes clear. Thousands of human skulls were shipped to Germany during the colonial era, in a bid to support so-called racial research theories. Some of them came from plundered graves, or were cut from the dead. For dealers at a market for curiosities on the German-Belgian border, the violent backstory is even made into a selling point.
Customs expert Daniel Bein says the trade in human skulls is not prohibited per se. But politicians are now evaluating the issue, and plan to introduce legislation that will ban private trade in human skulls and bones.
The filmmakers conduct research at home and abroad, visit an international market for human skulls, meet one of the largest dealers in London and speak to buyers in Germany. They also accompany people who are themselves searching for the skulls of their ancestors, to bring them back to their homeland.

It's sickening. Especially when our leaders keep it silent. This is too much
All are equal. Some are more equal than the others.
Still colonized in death?😮
Any kiwis here ?
I have a feeling that a fair amount of those skulls/bones were looted from ancient European graveyards – or even not so ancient ones – wonder what people would feel like to see grandma’s head for sale. How such a display is allowed is beyond me, absolutely disrespectful regardless of where they came from (although the possibility of them being skulls from colonial times adds another layer of repulsion).
You are wrong. Old-time tabu stops modern Europeans from intervening today. It a fault, the rulers in developing nations and world-wide religions are the greater threat to local population now.
Buying and selling human parts so wrong.
Decades ago it used to be shrunken heads from remote tribes. Personally I don't care about this, it's a lump of calcium after all, but I would never see the need to buy one.
This is just an excuse to bang on about German or White imperialism again for the umpteenth time.
White people didn't start slavery, they ended it on a global scale.
But, humans true to form, are still at it.
So-called civilized people engaging in such a wicked trade. Is this not worst than slavery?
What disturbing about this is shells is more protected by law than human bones and skull.
Check out the descendant of the Jameson distillery, traveled up the Congo and bought a young slave girl at the start of his trip up river to give to a cannibal tribe as a gift , he then painted water colours of the event .
Why why why 😭😭😭😭
As long as you treat the skull with respect I don’t think it’s such a problem. People once lived their lives in these skulls. You are wearing your skull right now. Will it eventually end up on someones shelf? Who knows, you certainly won’t be in it anymore. I wonder where you will be. I like my skull it’s a great one… one of the best skulls ever actually.
19:05 Dude looks exactly like how id imagine a guy big in the skull trade
This is Democratically Authoritarianism, selling human bodies legally dehumanise and people laughing. The gruesome Genocide still sold legally is injustices to even the people who died gruesomely is a shame to the highest of so called Democratic practices. It's a great shame 🫠
Mental. that's what this is,mental. No cause like, what are you trying to explain?
I see some comments from people who really don't understand the gravity of the matter and why this is a very painful topic to the descendants of the victims. There are four plausible sources for these human remains and all are illegal:
1). A murder was committed somewhere (UDHR 1948 Art. 3; ICCPR 1966 Art. 6).
2). A grave was robbed (UNESCO 1970; Customary IHL Rule 115).
3). Smuggling from archaeological sites (UNESCO 1970; UNIDROIT 1995).
4). Harvesting from active conflict zones or mass burial sites (Geneva Conventions 1949; Customary IHL Rule 115).
There is no legal or ethical scenario where any of this is acceptable.
"There is no need to return them, here in Europe they are BETTER CARED FOR"???, "Some RICH CORRUPT African will eventually come and PAY US A LOT OF MONEY FOR THEM"??? unbelievable!, totally unbelievable!! 🤯☹
This DW documentary on the human skull trade is absolutely gut-wrenching. As a New Zealander, it hits especially hard given the ongoing struggle of the Māori people to reclaim the ancestral heads held by the Crown. It's a stark reminder of the deep historical wounds and the ongoing fight for cultural restitution.
Ah DW's usual woke agenda documentary
I don’t understand the logic behind this trade. Who in their right mind would do this? Humans alive or dead should be respected and not treated as goods. I’m utterly disgusted!!!
Absolutely despicable
Filth WEIRD
Honestly appalling. Didn't expect that this kind of trade would be legal here.
Wtf
Imagine a man is born on this Earth, unbeknownst to him, he'll find out at the end of his days he becomes an object of commerce both in this life and the next.
In a very cruel, macabre kind of way it's like we're all The Walking Dead, 🤣, 💀, 😭
As a man of African descent I find the Namibia and other similar stories disturbing because that could have been me or one of my loved ones.
Her words are highly philosophical and slippershot … Great awareness
You got to be weird to even go to that place! Let alone buy one..
So boring zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Thatd be pretty cool to make a cup from a skull!!!
Gangsta!!!💯💯💯💯💯
JESUS IS RETURNING SOON!
ST JOHN 3:16! ❤
HALLELUJAH! 🔥❤️✝️❤️🔥
You erased my appropriate comment. This is what you call honest journalism?
No respect for the dead.
I can feel the pain of German colonialism.
This gives me a headache
No respect for the dead.
31:12 the delusion starts here.
So stop hating and villainizing China, DW. Look in the mirror!
The history of EVERY ethnic group and religion and culture is rife with atrocities so my question is , how do programs like this help our human society / global village today ? Shame on DW !
Something wrong with these people and this is how western promote how civilized they are which literally show going backwards in dark ages
how tf do you get through customs with that?
Seems to be something strangely peculiar to Germanic cultures and the collection of human remains: Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert's skulls were taken from their graves and publicly displayed at one point. Even the top portion of the former Viennese kapellmeister Gaetano Donizetti's skull was displayed in a pawn shop collecting coins for ages, otherwise forgotten, and only known that 'it had once belonged to a great man'…
It is so disrespectfull of that guy saying that no one cares about their ancestors remains..! I mean… What if it was your ancestors? So wrong. 🤦🏻♀️
This is sickening
The west is 🤬
