Tornado Warnings and Watches Issued for Georgia and South Carolina as Conditions Deteriorate

A Tornado Warning was issued Saturday afternoon for Screven County in southeast Georgia, and a Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. EDT for parts of Georgia and South Carolina, including the Charleston area.

The National Weather Service in Charleston, SC, issued the warning after radar showed rotation in a severe thunderstorm.

Tornado Warning: Screven County, Georgia

The latest warning was issued at 2:34 p.m. EDT and runs until 3:15 p.m. EDT.

At 2:34 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was near Captolo, moving northeast at 20 mph.

The source is radar-indicated rotation.

Locations in its path include Newington, Hunters, Captolo, Sheppards, White Hill, Plantation Airpark, Green Hill, Farmdale and Halcyondale.

Flying debris will be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur, and tree damage is likely.

A previous warning for the same storm covered Halcyondale and Cameron until 2:45 p.m.

Tornado Watch 679 Until 8 p.m. EDT

The Storm Prediction Center issued the watch at 1:50 p.m. EDT.

Georgia: Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Jefferson, Jenkins, Screven, Tattnall and Toombs counties.

South Carolina: Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, Jasper and Orangeburg counties.

Coastal waters: Charleston Harbor, and coastal waters from the South Santee River to Edisto Beach, and from Edisto Beach to Savannah, out 20 nautical miles.

A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible. Stay alert and be ready to act quickly.

NWS Charleston also issued a Special Marine Warning earlier today for coastal waters from Edisto Beach to Savannah, out 20 nautical miles.
