Unconventional Tree Planter Adds Greenery to Sao Paulo’s Urban Landscape • FRANCE 24 English

The concrete jungle of Sao Paulo is being transformed into a green oasis by one man’s incredible dedication. Brazilian Helio da Silva, a former food industry executive, has taken it upon himself to plant around 40,000 trees in the bustling city over the course of just 20 years.

Initially dismissed as “crazy” for his ambitious goal, da Silva has proved his critics wrong by creating the stunning Tiquatira Park. What was once a hangout for drug users between two busy avenues is now a lush sanctuary with thousands of trees spanning 3.2 kilometers long and 100 meters wide. The park boasts an impressive variety of 160 tree species, adding a vibrant burst of color to the urban landscape.

Da Silva’s passion for environmental conservation has not only beautified Sao Paulo, but also provided a much-needed respite from the chaotic city life. His relentless efforts serve as a reminder of the impact that individuals can make in transforming their surroundings for the better. In a world where green spaces are increasingly rare, da Silva’s work stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through determination and perseverance.
