US-China: Who has the better prospects of withstanding a prolonged trade dispute?

The ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China has reached new heights, with both countries increasing tariffs on each other’s imports. Despite US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to pause tariffs on other countries, China remains a major target of massive tariffs. Trump has raised the tariff on Chinese imports to 125%, prompting Beijing to retaliate by potentially increasing tariffs on US imports as well.

China has vowed to “fight to the end” in the trade war with the US, while also seeking to enhance trade ties with other countries such as the European Union and Malaysia. The Chinese government has filed a protest with the World Trade Organization (WTO), accusing the Trump administration of “bullying” tactics.

Trump, on the other hand, has insisted that a trade agreement will be reached with China, despite the escalating tensions. China, however, has called on the US to meet them “halfway” in negotiations, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and equal dialogue.

Both countries have expressed concerns about the impact of the tariffs on the global economic order, with China warning that US tariffs could severely disrupt the stability of the global economic system. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has criticized the US tariffs as harmful to the whole world.

As the trade war intensifies, it remains to be seen which country will have the better prospects of withstanding a prolonged dispute. The outcome of these negotiations will have far-reaching implications for the global economy.
