Community Rallies as West Vancouver Hoarding Nightmare Draws Attention
In a serene corner of West Vancouver, just off Horseshoe Bay, a distressing situation unfolds behind a curtain of trees. A property plagued by piles of garbage and debris has become a flashpoint of frustration for residents, leading to mounting calls for action. For nearly a decade, complaints about the derelict home have steadily accumulated, exposing a growing concern among neighbors regarding both aesthetics and public safety.
Jennifer Reece, a resident of the Horseshoe Bay community, articulated the sentiments of many when she described the situation as “a nightmare.” What initially appeared to be a mere hoarding scenario has escalated into a grim spectacle, as clutter spills out from the property, encroaching on the once tranquil surroundings. The visual impact is compounded by reports indicating that the vacant home suffers from severe structural deficiencies, including leaks, mold, and a troubling vermin infestation.
According to a recent report presented to local council, the property presents significant fire hazards alongside health risks, calling into question the long-term viability of leaving it in its current state. The community’s frustration is palpable, leading to increasing pressure on local authorities to address the issue.
Despite the circumstances, residents express mixed feelings about the homeowner, reflecting a broader complex dynamic inherent in such situations. This emotional tug-of-war showcases the challenges faced by communities grappling with issues of mental health, property rights, and neighborhood integrity. As discussions continue, the fate of this beleaguered property remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the community’s call for action is growing louder.
As the debate unfolds, residents hope that their voices will not only lead to the resolution of this pressing issue but foster a better understanding of the underlying complexities associated with properties like this one. The situation in Horseshoe Bay serves as a poignant reminder of how neglected properties can impact community dynamics, safety, and well-being.

The house looks like it was beautiful at some point and being in Horseshoe Bay a huge bonus. There are so many people with mental health issues – since c0v1d it has escalated immensely! Hoarding is a coping and soothing mechanism for deep psychological issues. If the person doesn’t have the money and the city demolishes the house and removes ALL of it and the stuff she collected – the property will be sold to pay the bill. That is not going to be cheap.
Maybe it's just a historical archive. Maybe the city of West Van could take some of the historical elements from this collection and put them on display at Park Royal?
Y'all ignored her before she started to hoard the stuff, now you're paying attention too her… It is working for her exactly as she planned… Now, people see her… question is, was it worth it?
Amazing that the city has allowed this to continue given the remedies already exist under current bylaws
Seems they are more interested in virtue signalling than doing their jobs
A match?
Unacceptable. Unnatural. Sign of pathology. Of mental illness. This is what my species does to the planet writ large. So what are we doing about it?
LOOKS like Horseshoe Bay West Van where i used to live
Hoarders: "Look at all the cool stuff. I should get down there when the dumpers shiw up."
Beautiful location. People to help her clean it up if they care so much. ❤
How about some mental health support instead? Maybe start 12 years ago?
It’s for sale for $3 million
Why not community offer to clean it up and renovate the home. Thats what neighbourhood means. Helping someone in the community.. The owner obviously not in sound mind. Social service should step in.
I dont sympathize with horders. Clean that sht up and u can have ur place. There even willinf to help. But yet they want to live in a pile of garbage.
For being in one of the richest communities in Canada, y'all can't get her the help that she needs. Pathetic, live someplace your whole life, pay taxes, be a good neighbour and you can still have your home taken away and demolished.
It's West Van. You can still sell that house as is for millions. That's the crazy part.
The owner is likely having a hard time affording things, like repairs and demolition causing the hording problem to begin with. Hording helps with feeling secure when everything is uncertain. Tearing it down at the owners expense will spell doom for her mental health I'm sure. Maybe, a kind soul could start a go fund me campaign to assist in demolition and her recovery, rather than placing more of a burden on her. Just a suggestion. We are all human. Please remember that.
just give em some storage space 100 miles away to keep em busy.
I feel sorry for hoarders. Before I saw the show "hoarders" I thought hoarders were people who had neatly stacked newspapers and walls of organized movies and videogames. But on the show it was mostly just people afraid to throw anything out, until their house turns into a garbage dump.
Has Vancouver not seen their sidewalks and alleys?
So sad. At one time it must have been a beautiful home. Terrible for the owner and I feel for the neighbours. Sadly it needs to be demolished
That is not a home. It is a landfill.
Let’s hope the city takes it down and posts it on YouTube. 😁
I remember living with a horder in Surrey b.c. Guy was sitting in his trailer in the backyard, and fell asleep with a lit cig in his hand. Trailer lit up in flames. He got out but nearly cost us the house.
The house is far past the point of being repaired. The owner needs mental health assistance. There's so much trash there that it will take a large crew weeks to remove. Absolutely nothing of value
This isn't news.
I wonder who the homeowner was ??
It’s already demolished.
this is a mental health condition she's never going to be able to fix this problem and is probably waiting for the city to take it down
Suicidal Empathy is a problem in the WEST – forced help is all that is needed – disgusting this has waited sooooo long
The neighbours would pay for the demo probably … she needs to be looked after this lady
where is the owner start there,
still a 5-10 million house
Someone help the owners you may be next?
This shouldn't be tolerated for a whole year.
Leaver her alone! 😢🙏❤
Man if the city tears it down I hope they don't charge an upcharge. Clearly the lady needs help
The neighbours that say it's a sad situation, are you going to pitch in and help her?
I know gas aint cheap atm. But that and a match works very well.
Your property is not your property and the government can steal it and tear it down.
Who are we to tell other people how to lead their lives on their own property as long as they're not hurting others?
Maybe the government should be providing support instead of threatening to tear down someone's house.
Not good at all. Neighbours should not have to put up with this.
Hoarding is such a terrible mental illness. Not a choice.
So the owner next door gets blamed for mess on trails from house where it comes from but it's a nice place can't enjoy with all the mess
