Major Royal Navy Programmes Face Years of Delays Amid £10 Billion Defence Budget Cut
In a stark warning for the UK’s maritime defense capabilities, former adviser to the Ministry of Defence, Nick Carter OBE, has highlighted the detrimental impact of government delays in naval shipbuilding. Speaking on Times Radio Breakfast, he emphasized that these setbacks could significantly erode the UK’s strategic advantage in frontline operations.
The challenges arise as the UK grapples with a substantial £10 billion cut to its defense budget, a decision that has intensified scrutiny of military preparedness in an increasingly volatile global landscape. The cutback raises concerns that the Royal Navy may be ill-equipped to respond effectively to future threats.
Carter’s remarks underscore the critical importance of maritime power in national security. He warns that delays in the construction and operation of naval vessels will not only hinder current capabilities but could also set back progress for many years. The former Defence chief argues that sustained investment and timely delivery of naval programmes are essential for maintaining the UK’s defense posture and safeguarding its interests at sea.
The Royal Navy has long been a cornerstone of UK defense strategy, providing both deterrence and operational capability. As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the implications of underinvestment and delayed shipbuilding projects could prove to be far-reaching, diminishing the UK’s influence on the global stage.
As discussions about defense expenditures intensify, stakeholders from various sectors are urged to consider the long-term effects of these decisions. The implications of a short-sighted budgeting strategy could reverberate throughout the military landscape, affecting everything from defense readiness to industry support.
Carter’s insights present a compelling case for re-evaluating the current approach to naval defense spending. The time to act is now, he insists, as each passing day without action places the UK further behind its international counterparts in naval capabilities.
As the nation collectively reflects on its defense priorities, the conversation surrounding naval shipbuilding and budget allocations could become crucial in shaping the future of UK defense and security strategy.

This unbelievable we are an island nation. And 90% of our good come by sea . If you can’t protect your sea lanes the we are stuffed.
Remember in 1938 to 1945 we almost starved as most of the merchant men were sunk. If the farmers did not step up to the plate we would have
This government are a chamberlain lot and we all know we’re that left us … we now need a Churchillian administration the military must act
God bless our military
Nothing has been said by the government and as a result this is just hear say at the moment. I find this hard to believe given what is going on around the world at present.
Strange that governments can always find money for the workshy and lazy. Cut handouts, £10Bn will barely be noticed in the grand scheme of things.
Sad.
The ministry of defence is just like the foreign and home office completely corrupt . Billions goes missing without any investigation , billions spent on equipment that is never produced , never explained . Full of left wing labour traitors who simply line their own and mates pockets .
The Royal Navy has a mighty fleet of operational vessels consisting of 1 Aircraft carrier 2 Submarines 2 Destroyers and 5 Frigates. The rest of the fleet is out of action for years in some cases. What happens if Argentina attacks the Falklands again 😮 You could try asking Donald Trump to help 😂😂😂 . They can't even use the Aircraft carrier because there's not enough surface ships to protect it, so it sits in port rotting away. How many billions have been spent on migrants and we can't even protect ourselves anymore, politicians should face criminal charges for this. Trump was right having a go at NATO for not spending enough on defending themselves.
when you are a mouse ….. its time to stop pretending that you are a lion ….. UK is barely a regional power now …..
great job starmer you are a joke in international politics
What are you guys up to? What a joke
Stop housing and feeding illegals and paying them legal aid
Another Starmer U Turn caused by our Imbecile PM and his Marxist Cohorts..
So, we have seen the RN decommission Argyll, Westminster and Northumberland in rapid succession, HMS Lancaster "retired in place" last year (Bahrain, not even bothering to bring her home), HMS Richmond to be retired later this year and we watched as the RN seemed to struggle to deploy the HMS Dragon to Cyprus for a critical defense mission. It seems illogical that carving 10 billion out of the already insufficient defense budget by deferring much-needed replacement programs, especially when at least two of the new Type 26 Frigates are meant for the Norwegian Navy.
"Naval strategy is built strategy" remains a sound maxim, but obviously one that is foolishly ignored by the MoD and politicians.
A 10b cut during wartime. The UK is inviting enemies to have a good ol crack.
The defence of this country has been ruined by politicians very very few of whom have served in, or understand, the military.
You have to laugh funding a foreign war clearly takes priority. It is not like the Navy did anything to stop the invasion of the UK>
So why is our defence so minimal? Where has the money ear marked for defence been spent? Before we spend anymore money the public need to know otherwise they might think there is wholesale corruption.
A welfare state that can’t defend itself.
the MOD historically is as bad at doing there job just like the Civil service, the wastage is unbelievably horrendous and it is quietly written off with no accountability, they should remove the head civil servants at the MOD and replace them with people who know what they are doing and just use the mod civil service for simple admin which is probably the best they could manage with supervision.
While Starmer keeps showing us that he's the coward of the county, America's oldest military ally, France, is quietly nudging Britain out and taking their place in the new world order.
Less toys fir Isreal!
To cut the armed forces now with all these wars going on would be absolute suicide.
So this is a cut in the MOD wish for an extra £28 Billion. Thus £10 Billions of desired weapons / services are being pushed beyond the next four financial years leaving £18 Billion of desired spending for the Treasury to fund. Before the effects of the economic multiplier and taxes, NIC on UK spend, this is an average of £4.5 Billion a year.
Surely the Treasury can find £18 Billion given that the UK is forecast to spend £5,959 Billion over the next financial years?
Substantial resources were allocated to immigrant programs at the expense of the native population's security.
These are absolute idiots…
10 billion pounds will go to migrant settlement programs throughout England.
Why not cut benefits for illegal immigrants?
Traitors ! The lot of them.
At this time ??
Starmers a see you next tuesday him and king islamic charles
Someone has to pay for the day to day needs for all your doctors and engineers. They won't stop coming as long as you continue subsidizing them every step of the way. Defense budgets are not sacrosanct but the savings need not go to illegal immigrant jihadists but instead to the British citizens themselves.
Disaster
Got to pay for those 4 star hotels though eh ?
