The Syrian government’s grip on power is being tested once again as Islamist-led rebels have successfully captured the strategically crucial city of Hama from three sides. Both the militants and the Syrian government have confirmed the takeover, with the army stating that they withdrew from the city to prevent urban combat and civilian casualties.
Despite the government’s efforts to defend Hama by sending large military convoys and receiving support from Russian and Iranian officers, the rebels were able to make significant advances in the region. The Syrian army, along with Russian and Iranian forces, has been engaged in fierce battles across Hama province, with joint Syrian-Russian warplanes conducting airstrikes in the area.
State news agency SANA reported on the ongoing conflict, highlighting the intensity of the fighting and the involvement of foreign allies to support President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Unfortunately, the violence has claimed the life of award-winning Syrian photographer Anas Alkharboutli in one of the airstrikes on Hama.
The capture of Hama raises questions about President Assad’s ability to defend his rule amid mounting pressure from rebel forces. With the support of long-time allies such as Russia and Iran, Assad still has access to military resources and strategic partnerships that could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the conflict in Syria.
As the situation in Syria continues to evolve, the international community closely monitors the developments in Hama and other key regions, as the civil war in the country shows no signs of abating.

I doubt Syrian army is willing to defend Hama in house-to-house fighting. This is not Stalingrad. They will withdraw all the way to Damascus and make their last stand there.
